Virus protection is only as good as the latest update you have on your computer. If you have a state of the art virus engine with the latest virus updates from 1999 then you are in trouble! Most users do not update their virus engines since they believe that just having the virus program is good enough. When last did you update yours?
I run an update every Sunday. I used to have it programmed to do it automatically, but I would forget to turn the 'puter on So now as soon as I get home from church I turn the 'puter on and run an update, then run a virus scan.
I have Norton Internet Security Professional, it is due to expire in May of 2004. Is there a better system? How much? Thanks.
Thanks JB, in May when Norton runs out, I will download the AVG. I have one more question for you. What are reg marks?
Reg Marks? Registration marks? As in ®? I am not sure what you are asking and if it is related to this thread. If you are talking about virus programs then it may refer to the unique code given to the program. In AVG you can only activate it with a unique registration code given to you upon download. If this si tnot what you are talking about then please Email the question via contact page if it is not realted to the thread.
I've been using AVG for about a year now, and I always upgrade every couple of weeks -- or when there is a virus alert/threat in the news. Great little program. I had the same problem, JB, with Norton and McAfee trying to take over my whole system. I think there are still some old Symantec files on my computer that I stumble across now and then.... how annoying..! But AVG is great. and free!

Well, I love Symantec Antivirus, which is a Norton product. I think it is one of the best available and always recommend it to everyone who asks. My second choice would be McAfee. I run the Symantec Antivirus Enterprise Edition at work which is different from the product they make for home users. I have none of the problems you describe. Perhaps they had these problems with older releases, but I have no problems with their current product.
At work my system is set up so that it goes out each night at a predetermined time, checks Symantec for updates, downloads them if they exist and then it automatically pushes these updates out to all the PCs in my firm. No intervention necessary from me. It is awesome.
I have not used AVG, but I always operate on the "you get what you pay for" theory. I can call Symantec for support whenever I have a problem or question and I find that very reassuring.
My home PC runs Symantec's Norton Antivirus program as well, but it is the home version. I have had no problems with it. I don't update the definitions as often as I should, because I never use the PC, my son does. As Agene does, I believe that at the least you should check for updates once per week. More often when there are big threats recently found. This is why I like my automated system at work. I am never more than 24 hours away from the newest virus definitions. I use AVG and I update it once a week. I have it set to automatically update so I don't have to run it manually. Once a week should be a minimum for updating your AV program.
