Here we go again. I filled up a month ago for $2.69/gallon. This week it's $3.11. That's just wrong.

It has risen significantly here too since last week, we've been told that it's due to the current contentions between Iran and Britain, with the problem that arose last week with the taking of 15 British men as hostages in Iran.
We've been told to expect further price hikes.

BEHIND HIGH OIL AND GAS PRICES

All this week, the big factor behind rising oil prices has been the standoff between Britain and Iran over the fate of 15 British sailors seized by Iran in the Persian Gulf on March 23. But the steadily heightening tensions - British Prime minister Tony Blair now intends to take the matter to the UN Security Council - has camouflaged another factor likely to make this another long hot summer for American drivers even if the crisis is resolved and the sailors are eventually released.

QUOTE
f all that weren't enough to bolster prices, demand for crude oil from the United States has actually been depressed in recent weeks by the current round of refinery downtime and maintenance now underway as oil companies shift refinery production from heating oil to gasoline. "There's about 25 percent more maintenance going on than we thought," says Morse. As those refineries come back online in April and May, he says, U.S. demand for crude oil will jump by roughly 2 million barrels a day.

Not only refinery maintenance, but I believe it's been posted before that our refineries are limited which boosts prices due to lack of capacity. No new refinereies have been built in the past 20 years, and several places in the Katrina-ravaged areas of the Gulf coast are still offline.

It's going to be a long, hot (expensive) summer.

WATCH OUT: HERE COMES $4 GASOLINE

Gasoline prices, already above $3 a gallon in some states, could charge higher this summer and hit $4 a gallon in some locations, according to one industry expert.

The Price Of Oil

If you think gas prices are taking you out of a customary living style then you can always choose to go to one of these countries:

QUOTE
WHERE GASOLINE IS CHEAP

In Saudi Arabia gasoline costs about 45 cents a gallon. In Iran it's 33 cents. Venezuelans pay less than a quarter.

As an alternative there is the bicycle, motorbike, diesel vehicles, and public transportation.

Locally gas is up to $3.53 for regular unleaded, higher at some stations, lower at others, but I think this is a good average.

Rather off topic, but...
Yesterday, I traded in my 7-year-old, 6-cyl car, which was getting only 17-19 mpg, for a 4-cyl, 5-speed manual transmission. My mpg should double.
