That's a very good series from what I've heard. I've read about a quarter of the first book. Sadly I have the problem of starting to many books at once. I'm working my way to finish one but I jump back and forth through 4 different books.
Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan
Taken by Thomas Cook
X-Men/Star Trek: Planet X and
Flash Foward
anyways...my father and I came up with this theory that the dinosaurs never were exstinct. They just weren't allowed on Noah's arc (sorry for the religious twist...just a joke with the folks ) Anyways some managed to survive and lived in remote areas. When people saw one they fled and try to justify their fear with stories of fearsome fire breathing demons (side steppin what Raven said
As for their roles in stories, I agree with with the other dude, before Dragons were revered as evil, destructve creature. Now-a-days they are begining to portray the evils of man more that just savage dragons.
Dio, to answer your question, the series I'm currently re-reading is the middle trilogy, called "The Liveship Traders" and is written by Robin Hobb. The first series is called
Anyway, it shows dragons as in danger of becoming extinct and why. Great writing, but it takes a while to get where the author wants you to go.

I love Dragons. I think they should be in every Fantasy novel. I tend to think the legend of Dragons came from Dinosaurs. I mean its not impossible that I Dinosaur could breath fire. (I don't want to get realy detailed so don't ask...)
Anyways I think Dragons are usually bad, but I think it would be cool to have a novel with good ones.
My thoughts? I love dragons! I love Warcraft 3! (cause it has dragons). I think dragons aren't given fair chance, in most story's they HAVE to bhe slain... But if you ever see the movie DragonHeart the dragon dies but he helps someone. The story is about how the Dragon helped a king by giving him a new heart cause the king's heart died/got stabbed and the king turns evil, so if the dragon dies, he dies. And in the end the dragon dies, kills the evil king and then the person that helped the dragon, and the queen were saved, the villages were no longer attacked, etc.
So you see, dragons should be good, exept for the reasons that they might eat you, burn you, pick you up a thousand feet and then drop you, they can still be nice... (somehow)

When I think of dragons, I think of Mortal Kombat (the game) where Liu Kang's animality move is to turn into a dragon. It was also featured in the movie. Liu Kang is the good guy in the game, and his animal side is a dragon, so dragons do have good connotations. Not often is this the case, but still present. My favorite dragon is the one in Shrek. She was awesome
I would have to say that my favorite dragon (besides the one in Shrek) is [u]The Dragon and the George[/b]. In that, the main character is a man in 20th Century America, who gets pulled into a 14th (?) Century Britain, with lots of magic. The twist is that HE is pulled into the body of a dragon, and must learn all about the dragons, how they function, and what they can/cannot do. There are several books now in the series. Lots of fun.
