The city of New York is opening a full-fledged high school for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students - the first of its kind in the nation, The Post has learned.
Operating for two decades as a small alternative program with just two classrooms, the new Harvey Milk HS officially opens as a stand-alone public school with 100 students in September.
The school, located at 2 Astor Place, is undergoing a $3.2 million in city-funded renovations approved by the old Board of Education in June of last year. It will eventually take in 170 students by September 2004, more than tripling last year's enrollment.

Good or Bad idea?
I personally think its sorta a good idea, because they get bullied and teased because of what they believe in. With the new school, no one is different.
This school was actually opened this fall. I am not sure how I feel to be honest with you. For one, it is a lot of money going towards resolving an issue that isn't really educational in nature and I am not sure this really helps resolve anything. Someone being homosexual isn't educational to them but others should be educated about what it means. So, I think the money might be better spent educating the offending students in the public schools to help eliminate the problem rather than isolating the students who are homosexual. I don't mean the money should be ear marked towards a student who has actually committed a wrong towards a homosexual student, but towards programs that help educate all students. I think a lot of prejudice is based upon misinformation and misunderstanding. Wouldn't it be better to educate everyone so that when these homosexual students are out of high school and in society that society as a whole might be better educated and more accepting of them?

I don't think this is a good idea. It will just create more problems for the kids that go to the school. It would be really hard for them to get teachers to go there...unless they are homosexual teachers. I think being a homosexual is wrong but i can't help what other people wanna do with their lives.
I dont find this right. I believe in the generation, people have a general 'respected fear' for gays. People may think its wrong but the idea has eased its way into society. There is much less ridicule for gays then i used to be. Im not against gays, i respect gays. But i think they are taking their sexuality to..a new level. I mean its another form of seperation isnt it? Its just like seperating whites black asains ect. except its a sex. Also they have gay/straight aliance clubs everywhere, my school has one. I dont think its necessary.
I understand the idea behind it but is totally unneccesarily in my opinion. Gays like any other person suffer discrimination, people in general suffer discrimination, if you're fat, if you're too slim, if you're black, if you're hispanic, if you're white and you live in a black neighboorhood, etc etc etc...so we cannot create schools to put each one of this groups. Is crazy. They need to deal with their lives like anybody else, in my opinion.
