Membership Delete

Q. Why are members deleted periodically?
Members must keep their account active. If they have not logged on and posted at least ONCE for more than six months they are deleted. There are four reasons for this:

1. The mail server has to work harder to send them notifications of topics for which they subscribed. When their Email is dead or full guess who gets the return Email... us.

2. One of the sad things about some forums is when you reply to someone that has not been there in months and they never reply, simply because they do not care. That can be frustrating for newbies who often 'talk' to members that are not with us. At least if they show up as a 'guest' they do not have to expect a reply.

3. Lurkers = wasted bandwidth. A user who loads page after page after page just because they are bored, this slows the system and eats up bandwidth. You have users who will join this site and they cannot read any posts because they did not put their intro yet, so what do they do... load page after page after page... looking for what we do not know. Most likely they do not read, and if so, this is the wrong forum for them.

4. It has been our experience that if a user does not post anything for over six months then they will never post anything. If a user is willing to let their account be deleted rather than make one post in a six month period then they do not care much about their membership or this community.

Q. How do you know if a user has not posted in six months?
A. The forum script handles that for us. It looks for all users that have not posted in six months and then deletes them. It is not done on an individual basis.
