Can we establish it before He comes?

Zion

"The establishment of Zion should be the aim of every member of this
Church. It can be safely said: As we seek with all our hearts to bring
forth and establish Zion, the vexations of too little time will disappear.
There are joys and blessings by enlisting in this noble cause. One's
personal life is transformed. The home is no longer a hotel but a place
of peace, security, and love. Society itself changes. In Zion, contentions
and disputations cease, class distinctions and hatreds disappear, no
one is poor---spiritually or temporally, and all manner of wickedness is
no more. As many have attested, 'Surely there could not be a happier
people among all the people . . . created by the hand of God.' (see
4 Nephi 1:16; see also vv. 1-18)."

(Keith B. McMullin, "Come to Zion! Come to Zion!" Ensign, Nov. 2002, 95)

Oh gosh, to establish Zion before He comes? hmmmm very hard to answer. I see it as a dream, very, veryyy far away. It will take so much in order to acomplish this, we are facing strong challenges in the Church right now, jealousy, envy and contention are at the order of the day so really just to imagine that the Saints will feel such a love for their fellow men that there will not be poor among them, seems like a dream really.

Yes, I think we can establish Zion before the Lord returns.

Although I know that the original question is referring to the actual city of Zion, Brigham Young taught very plainly that in order for the city to be established, Zion must first be established in each of our individual lives and families. Only a Zion person will be involved in building the city, or even dwelling there.

If we are Zion, I doubt that it will really matter to us where in Babylon we actually exist. We will be actively pursuing His will in establishing the community, society, and kingdom of Zion.

I believe that with our current membership in General - No, if we weed out the goats from the sheep then yes, but there has to be a great cleansing, something we discussed elsewhere (the trial period of the Saints - the Great Divide).

Well, it is mind boggling to visualize the entire church living in zion. If we concentrate on each of our individual families, then the families we home teach, we can get a good start. I'm already seeing a change in the church. There are fewer and fewer fence sitters. More and more people in the church are either committing themselves to the gospel in a greater degree or leaving it altogether. You don't see quite as many Sunday Mormons anymore.

I agree with JB.

The Lord will start His cleansing in His own House. Forces will polarize both in the world and in the Church (and already are). Great and terrible forces are at work and they are coming more into the open.

Often we find active members standing in diametric opposition to each other.

I think we will see changes, big changes, very soon. I think we will see the old persecutions arise but with more fervor than ever before.

Zion always has so many interpretations and often I hear the watered-down ones; but at some point it will be very real and tangible. The Cause of Zion is and ever was more than the Cause of the Church, it is the Cause of the Gospel itself in all things - and it will be a restoration of all things.

This is from https://www.mormontheology.com, an excerpt from "Hugh Nibley Speaks Openly":

"When I see this people grow and spread and prosper," said Brigham Young, "I feel there is more danger than when they are in poverty. Being driven from city to city . . . is nothing compared to the danger of becoming rich and being hailed by outsiders as a first-class community." (Approaching Zion, 53-54)

So bringing about Zion is not based on our prosperity, but upon our willingness to give it up... and serve the Lord no matter the consequences. Do I understand that correctly? It's an interesting article.

That is an excellent quote Farseer. Note who said it and the time they said it in... things are way different now... members are definitely secure - not having to move from city to city and also very prosperous in many situations - we are ripe for destruction? Blessed be the few who are really trying to establish Zion.
