It's sad in a way but maybe a relief also. He had suffered for quite some time. This ends the longest time in church history that the same 12 Apostles served together, over 9 years.

Yes, they actually thought he would have passed away before, but the Lord kept him - isn't it interesting that He (the Lord) chose to take him on the day of his 23rd year.

Offtopic but,
Gaucho - are you getting my Emails?

REPORT OF ELDER MAXWELL'S FUNERAL
See https://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,595080351,00.html

With his empty chair on the Tabernacle dais a stark reminder that death
doesn't discriminate, Elder Neal A. Maxwell was eulogized Tuesday on
Temple Square by the men who knew him best: top leaders of The Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his son, Cory. In his remarks,
President Hinckley said: "I know of no other man who spoke in such an
interesting and distinct manner. . . . Each talk was a masterpiece, each
book was a work of art. I think we shall not see one like him again."
