Autism & Smiling

When you look at your autistic child and smile does he / she smile back at you? My sons acknowledge my smile and smile back but often they become shy or uninterested as they are unaware what the smile is for as in seeing them do something do something special. This is a unique quality in my own sons as I know other parents with autistic children do not have this 'luxury' of even having their children look at them.
