So much oil, so much resources, yet the people are so poor and the money (bolivar) has no value?

I don't see Venezuela as a threat to the US militarily speaking. It would be unwise of Chavez to even consider attacking the US as it will only lead to his demise and possibly the demise of his country. He reminds me a bit of ex-Panama leader Noriega; blows a lot of hot air, but when it is time to stand and fight, I suspect he will run and hide like Noriega did.

I do not believe Chavez has any intentions of attacking the US, I think his point has been that it is the US that wants to attack him (see the posts before this one where he claims attempts on his life and military missions). Unlike Iran, Iraq, North Korea and others that try to interfere with the business of others Venezuela is simply 'conducting business' that only seems to lean towards a socialist - communist - dictatorship regime, but so far there is nothing really substantiated. It is all about economics to me because of Venezuela's large oil reserve.

QUOTE
CARACAS, Venezuela - The American singer and activist Harry Belafonte called President Bush "the greatest terrorist in the world" on Sunday and said millions of Americans support the socialist revolution of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

I know I'm a bit late on this, but thought it was worth mentioning. Belafonte, just a few days before he made these remarks, was voted AARP Person of the Year. The AARP later recanted their decision. While Belafonte is certainly entitled to his opinions, he should almost be viewed as an enemy of the State after cavorting with this socialist leader who has openly defied and threatened the US. Now Belafonte gets to be in the same company as Cindy Sheehan, who recently also embraced Chavez for his negativity towards the US and George Bush.

Au contraire. Hugo is courting China, India, other Latin American countries, and Russia for new oil export business. He's going to make powerful allies and rake in the cash. I read somewhere recently that Pres. Chavez has promised to build over 20 new tanker ships to accommodate new contracts.

While I think some of his grandstanding against the US is just braggadocio, he's not making anything secret about who he's making friends with.

Chavez is busying buying weapons made by Russia, meeting with Iran, dinning with Cuba and basically all of the US enemies because of a supposed failed attempt on his life as he put it - orchestrated by the US to get him out of office. I wonder if the citizenry really understands where all of this is leading?

There is one company, that I'm aware of, whose gasoline comes from Venezuelan oil, and that's Citgo. I read recently where they are having supply troubles. Here's the link and quote from a Venezuelan news source:

QUOTE
Caracas, Venezuela, July 14, 2006-Citgo, a subsidiary of Venezuela's state owned oil company PDVSA, announced yesterday that it plans to stop supplying approximately 1,800 of its 14,000 gas stations in the United States. The reason is that it no longer wants to purchase gasoline for these stations from refineries other than its own.

Currently Citgo purchases 130,000 barrels of gasoline per day from refiners outside of its own refinery network, in order to cover the demand that its 14,000 affiliated gas stations generate. Citgo decided that such purchases leave it at a disadvantage with respect to other gas station chains and thus decided to cut off supply to some of its stations.

Venezuela's Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Rafael Ramirez, explained today that the cutback to Citgo stations does not in any way imply a cutback of Venezuelan crude oil to the United States.

The supply to the 1,800 gas stations that will no longer receive Citgo gasoline will be cut simply but not renewing their supply contracts. "We are avoiding contracts that do us harm," said Ramirez.

Ramirez further clarified that, "There are no plans to leave the U.S. market, something that President Hugo Chavez has declared before."

Is this a testing of the waters, to see how these stations will fare after being essentially abandoned by their supplier? Interesting, I think.

I am surprised nobody answered about Chavez's statements towards Bush. I think the comment was out of place, rude and let me say "childish", definitely is not a statement you expect from a head of government.
