John The Baptist

DID JOHN THE BAPTIST BAPTIZE IN CAVE?

Archaeologists think they've found a cave where John the Baptist baptized many of his followers -- basing their theory on thousands of shards from ritual jugs, a stone used for foot cleansing, and wall carvings telling the story of the biblical preacher.

Baptist John

wow, that was an interesting article. i guess it coule be possible, but my question would be why would he want to hide the fact that he was baptizing people. because he was baptizing people before Jesus got baptized, and isn't baptism supposed to be and act of showing the world about you being reborn in the Spirit?

I would think that it wasn't so much that he (John) was hiding what he was doing, as the fact that he lived in the wilderness, and needed a place to perform the baptisms and to shelter from the harsh desert conditions. Also, by it being in a cave, there was a bit more privacy, since there is an indication that people disrobed before the baptism.

According to my beliefs, baptism is much, much more than simply a public proclamation of being reborn. It is how we actually enter into the basic covenant of the Gospel, wherein we proclaim faith in Jesus Christ, that we have repented (and are continuing to do so), that we are willing to submit to God and be obedient to Him. In return, He promises to forgive us our sins and assist us in our attempts to be obedient by giving us the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

With this in mind, the baptism doesn't have to be very public, as the covenant is between each individual and God, with Jesus Christ mediating.
