The Significance Of Soap

Throughout the movie, there is a recurring theme of soap. Tyler Durden is a soap-maker by trade, and uses the by-product of liposuction labs as his main ingredients. Is there a hidden meaning here? His soap ends up being sold to major department stores, where, you guessed it, the folks who had liposuctions done, are purchasing the soap made from their own by-products. Just one of the simple ironies provided in this movie.

I thought that was both a grotest and yet unique idea. It shows people can be sold anything! I am sure he did not say where it was coming from and the people bought it like it was hot. I believe it was the same with the Fight Club - they bought it up, but did not really know the ingredients involved. I believe I would have to watch this movie again for it to be fresh in my mind. It has been so long.

The obvious oxymoron here is that soap is associated with cleanliness and their main ingredient was far from clean! The message is that out of something disgusting and discarded can come something that is clean and widely accepted. This could also be the link between the 2 characters; the Narrator and Tyler.

Well actually the soap was meant to enhance beauty and not necessarily cleanliness. So you can say that the fat (which is usually considered a negative to beauty) is now made into something that now positively affects comeliness.

Here is a quote from the movie regarding soap:

QUOTE
Tyler sold it to the stores at twenty bucks a bar.  God knows what they
charged.  We were selling rich women their own fat back to them.

The Narrator refers to the buyers as rich women. Rich, because only the wealthy had enough money for the liposuction procedure. Women, because they are generally the ones who are interested in special soaps for beauty purposes. Why were Tyler and the Narrator targeting 'rich women'? Is it because of their own experiences with rich people or with women, or with both? Could it even be linked back to experiences with his mother? I also remember Tyler and the Narrator having a conversation about his parents, but can't recall if specific references were made to his mother.
