NORWAY HUNTS FOR STOLEN 'SCREAM'

Norwegian police have launched a nationwide hunt for armed thieves who stole
two classic paintings by Edvard Munch, including "The Scream," in a brazen
daytime heist in Oslo.

Is it possible the "Scream" heist was an inside job? We'll talk to the
director of the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway.

Stolen Scream

The heist was done in broad daylight; seems like the perpetrators knew exactly what they wanted because they targeted the 2 paintings immediately and quickly. I believe the last report indicated that the car was found with the picture frames inside of them. This isnt the first time the 'Scream' painting has been stolen; the last time the robbers gave up trying to get a ransom for it and it was recovered.

Scream Stolen! UFO & Writing Art Education Sciences

Talking about this story this morning, lots of people were saying that the thieves were bunglers, clumsy, didn't know what they were doing. But you what? It worked, they stole Edvard Munch's "The Scream," and they got away with it. They walked into a museum in Norway yesterday wearing masks, brandished a gun, tore the painting off the wall, and walked out. Apparently the guards were all scared off, and tourists took pictures. Some of these pictures appear on the front page of a number of newspapers today. And it simply looks like someone moving apartments, a guy carrying a big picture out to a waiting car. Except, of course, that he's wearing a mask. Now those of us who are fans of "The Thomas Crown Affair," the second version, and I really don't want to get into the debate over Pierce Brosnan/Rene Russo vs. Steve McQueen/Faye Dunaway right now, passions on that one just run too high?anyway, those of us who liked that movie always thought that art theft had to be much more complicated: guys in black hanging from wires, that kind of thing. Whoever thought you could just walk in a museum and walk out with a famous painting.

Now "The Scream" is one of the most recognizable pieces of art in the world. It turns out there are four versions of it, one of them having been stolen before. So what can the thieves do with it? Can't really fence it, for obvious reasons. Put it on the wall and just gaze at it in secret? I guess that's possible, although it seems unlikely. Ransom it back to the museum? That seems to be what most people think will happen. It turns out that this kind of thing happens more often than we think, or know about.
