''He's an impressive hockey coach but he's an impressive person as well,'' general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said of Maurice, who took over in mid-January.

Johnson Palat MacKinnon Up For Rookie Award (Yahoo Sports)

Tampa Bay Lightning forwards Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat are finalists for the NHL's top rookie award. They're joined by Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche in the running for the Calder Trophy. Johnson had a rookie team-record 24 goals and tied with MacKinnon for the NHL lead among rookies. MacKinnon, selected first overall in the draft by Colorado, led all NHL rookies in scoring with 63 points.

Flyers Promote Ron Hextall To General Manager (Yahoo Sports)

Ron Hextall got his ''dream job.'' Hextall was promoted to general manager by the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday to replace Paul Holmgren, who was elevated to president. Hextall is Philadelphia's all-time winningest goalie and served as assistant GM last year. ''I've been very fortunate to work under Bobby Clarke, Paul Holmgren, and Dean Lombardi out in Los Angeles - three very good people but also three very astute people who I took a lot of lessons from the last 15 years. Holmgren replaced Clarke as GM during the 2006-07 season and led the Flyers to within two games of the Stanley Cup title in 2010.
