You can so this by sating you move x many feet and/or he walks down the steps and off to the right/left, or by more descriptive words. But, I need to know where you move to on the mat either way.

Yaeth fires blindly in to the darkness at the hissing sound he hears one arrow plink as it hits stone and another make a distinguishable sound as it strikes something.
You can hear the sound of feet and saw the shapes of what you think are people come down the steps. The group is now little more than 15 feet from you. The nearest one about 10 feet away. You heard a couple of voices give call 2 sounded like meant one sounded like a woman's voice.
(Out of Game: Certification on damage math. First hit rolled 4 +3 of magic of bow + frost if wanted. Second hit rolled 2+ 3 for magic of bow + frost? The Secant hit was the only one that hit. I rolled a % dice because you could not see your enemy, and where firing blind by your ears.)

Haru timidly Lags behind moving with the group but not off of the steps. He has his spear at the ready.
