The Game Master says...

GM: No action for Seth so we move on...

Artemis leaves Seth and starts walking back to rejoin the rest of the squad when she suddenly hears a scream from the direction she came. She runs back and shines her analyzer's dim light only to find Seth shaking - his fingers are in his mouth. Her heart pumps and her anxiety raises as she wonders what happened. Seth replies,

"You left me in the dark and I didn't know what to do."

Artemis is amazed that such a grown man could behave in such a matter. Nevertheless, you eventually meet back with the squad to learn of their findings. You first meet with Gault and then later you see Major and Uhura at work.

Uhura checks the hole with her analyzer and discovers nothing other than the same readings as before save that the tree itself seems to be heated in some way as though it is carrying energy. The analyzer goes crazy when you pass it near the bark. These readings are most confusing for Uhura, they defy known science.

Major tries to squeeze through the hole but it is not so simple as it seems as the tree itself acts as a natural barrier.

GM: I need a roll against Body (Embedded) on Major's next action. A fail means you aren't able to contort your body sufficiently to get past the tree. Everyone say what you wish to do now. You MAY want to wait for Major's roll first as a Post in case it influences your next action, then everyone can Post. If you want to try the hole as well then you all need to make a similar roll.

The Game Master says...

Major's effort to fit through the small cavity is no better than when Artemis tries. You determine that the hole between the stone and the tree will need to be made bigger if all of you are to pass through. Whenever Artemis comes close to the tree Artemis' analyzer also reads unusual signals of radiation from the tree but still within borderline safe levels.

The Game Master says...

Artemis' weak body does not make her very good with an axe but her strong intention on cutting the tree is evident as she request for everyone to move away. Seth, her bosom buddy in the adventure thus far, stays and offers to hold Aremis' analyzer as she swings.

Before this, Major takes up a post by the doorway along with Gault who looks on but can merely see the dim light of the analyzer and not much else. Uhura, leaving her analyzer by Major, goes to the midway point of the temple's entrance. She can see some of the daylight illuminating the way to the entrance and giving mental relief from its warm presence.

Now Artemis is ready.

Her first few swings leaves the tree untouched but the tree isn't going no where and neither is Artemis so she tries again, again and again with the sound of frustration in her voice until suddenly she makes a deep cut. Immediately, she can see a slight white glow appear out of the wound of the tree. The analyzer, which has been reading steadily, Seth holds spikes suddenly slightly above dangerous and then subsides to normal.

The analyzer by Major keeps reading normal. Gault cannot see the slight glow emitting from the tree's new cut from his location thus giving you an indication how dull the glow shows.

GM: Say what you wish to do now.

The Game Master says...

Gault does not stay and moves towards the entrance of the temple passing Uhura along the way.

As he gets closer to the entrance the light from the sun bothers his eyes and it takes awhile for him to adjust to it. When he can see well again he continues to the temple's entrance. The outside looks the same as he remembered it save for a native warrior sitting on an old tree stump about 30 feet from the doorway. His back is turned to you and he appears to be eating something with vigor.

Meanwhile...

Artemis, tired from the tree getting the best of her swings, decides to rest giving Seth the chance to try an 'attack' of his own. While not mighty in strength he does manage to get some good chips away albeit with many tries. You determine that the bark is both the typical material of wood you know and some kind of rubber-like substance that absorbs the impact of the axe.

As before with each successive hit the analyzer spikes and then goes back to normal. One certain blow by Seth makes a big gap and causes the light and gel-like substance to emanate from the tree. The analyzer spikes to just being a digit in the hazard range.

The analyzer by Major also goes off with the same reading.

GM: Say what you wish to do now.

The Game Master says...

GM: No actions for Gault so we move on.

Seth starts his onslaught on the tree and sure enough the analyzer Artemis holds goes into 'red'.

Seth's gap in the tree widens but the rubbery sensation makes it very hard work. Additionally you notice that the gel-like light also attempts to patch the gap sort of how blood coagulates an open wound.

Meanwhile...

The analyzer by Major also starts to flicker on 'red' but not quite, however it is enough for him to quickly pick it up and follow Uhura to the entrance where Gault is already standing.

Just as you get there the warrior that was eating suddenly turns his head around and jumps up quickly dropping some of his fruit to the ground.

In what almost seems to be paranoid behavior he says to Gault,

"Why you come back? Why? You go temple, you go temple. Why you here?"

You notice he takes small steps backwards while talking.

GM: Say what you wish to do now.

The Game Master says...

As Uhura looks on, Major explains his reason for being there. When he mentions that they encountered the gel-like substance from the tree the native warrior looks surprised, his mouth partially open and he says speedily,

"Where you get 'life blood' from? You no cut tree, you know cut tree, is sacred!"

The warrior starts to pace a bit seemingly bothered by the thoughts now in his mind.

Just then...

Gault peers outside looking up at the great trees reaching into the sky. He does not see anything different about them than before but he hardly has time to observe when he is interrupted with,

"No come outside, bad luck, go back in, no use tree blood!"

Says the warrior to you. The warrior now seems annoyed and frustrated as he breathes heavily. He starts to look back at the village and then the ground as though trying to make a decision.

Meanwhile...

Back in the room Seth analyzes if his axe cuts causes the jagged gap to enclose faster than he can widen it. From observance you can see that the gel-like substance does try to close his work but it is a slow process so probably with another 10 minutes you could make a hole big enough to go through.

While the analyzer now is within harmful range albeit mild, Artemis decides to scoop up the gel-like substance with her hand. As she does so she notes the unusually warm feeling it gives her hand. The gel-like substance has the same consistency of the jelly from the aloe vera plant. There is no smell but she feels as if the gel-like substance has a mind of its own as it moves and probes her hand it starts to get warm, and then warmer....

GM: Say what you wish to do now.

The Game Master says...

Seth continues to cut away at the tree as Artemis haphazardly plays with the gel-like substance it goes from warmer to hot quickly thus burning her hands. She fights to get off the sticky substance by smearing it off on her clothes but it is not as simple as it seems. Artemis can feel the outer layer of her skin begin to blister.

Around this time...

Each of you ask questions of the warrior and he does reply while pacing giving mostly short answers.

To Uhura he says,

"You use big light - read writings, they show you."

To Major he says,

"You come outside you make bad luck."

To Gault he says,

"Tree is sacred, no touch tree. You not see answer on wall, it show you way?"

GM: Artemis takes -1HP. Say what you wish to do now.

The Game Master says...

GM: No action for Gault again, so we move on.

Artemis frantically goes through her backpack placing the gel-like substance all over it and the contents within. Her 'dirty' hands eventually lay old of the first aid kit which sure enough has 'something' that may help with this hazard.

You spike yourself with it and instantly start to feel relief as the liquid numbs your pain and relaxes your nervous system. Artemis is now 'on top of the world' as her native and high tech brews mesh in her system.

Artemis uses her drinking supply, thus contaminating the container, in order to wash off the gel-like substance off but she quickly realizes that it is almost like glue and simply wetting it does no good.

By this time Seth looks on and wonders how to help.

Around this time...

Major asks about the "Big light" And the warrior says,

"You no have big light? How you see temple if you no have big light?"

For the first time you see him smile as he continues,

"I have big light, I trade you, yes?"

Uhura jumps in that she is interested in getting one to which the warrior says,

"We have more, two, three, you need more? We trade yes?"

Just then...

While the simple bartering is going on Gault is none the wiser that a small colorful snake has come out from under some leaves near the temple's doorway to seek a more cozy habitation in his pant leg.

GM: I need a roll against Body for Gault, over your Body is a fail. Everyone, say what you wish to do now.
