Animals do have much keener awareness than humans, because we tend to rationalize some instinctive or spiritual promptings as irrational fear or superstition. I don't suggest we do everything that pops into our minds, but listening to our natural senses a little more is probably a good thing.

DID INDIA'S MILITARY RECEIVE EARLY WARNING ON TSUNAMI?

Officials said Thursday they will investigate a report that India's military got a hint a tsunami was approaching an hour before it hit the southern coast, but bad communications and bureaucratic missteps kept a warning from reaching disaster officials in time.

Ambassador : Aceh Death Toll May Hit 400,000

QUOTE
The death toll in Acheh, the region worst hit by last Sunday's tsunami, may exceed 400,000 as many affected areas could still not be reached for search and rescue operations, Indonesia's Ambassador to Malaysia Drs H. Rusdihardjo said Thursday.

So asks the title of this blog post:

My family and I just back from Burma and my wife knows a pilot for an airline there. He told her that he went down there after the tsunami hit and that there were villages that were completely wiped out. I know for a fact that these villages have more then 56 people in them. It's a sad situation for the Burmese people when the juanta is too afraid of losing control if they ask for help from the outside world.

Which points to this news item

Burma Action Ireland has expressed concern that the true facts about the impact of Sunday's tsunamis on the people of Burma may not have been revealed.

The country's military rulers have said Burma was not badly affected by the tidal waves that killed at least 87,000 people in more than 10 countries.

However, Burma Action Ireland spokesman Hugh Baxter said this may not be true.

"The Burmese government has a track record of under-reporting casualties in natural disasters, so it's difficult to know," he said.
"We would quite frankly hope that in this case the military were actually telling the truth."

Burman/Myanmar also experienced an earthquake today, but no damage was reported.

It is beginning to look, to me, like the numbers may exceed 1/2 million. Possibly even 1 million.

RAIN ADDS TO MISERY IN S. ASIA

After the devastation wreaked by the seas, a deluge from the skies deepened the misery for tsunami-stricken areas Saturday, triggering flash floods in Sri Lanka that sent evacuees fleeing and increasing the threat of deadly disease as survivors shivered in relief centers. The death toll was likely to hit 150,000.

Another touching story...

From CNN:

Family dog saves boy from waves

CHINNAKALAPET, India (AP) -- "Run away!" her husband screamed from a rooftop after he spotted the colossal waves.

The command was simple but it presented Sangeeta with a dilemma: She had three sons, and only two arms.

She grabbed the youngest two and ran -- figuring the oldest, 7-year-old Dinakaran, had the best chance of outrunning the tsunami churning towards her home.

But Dinakaran didn't follow. He headed for the safest place he knew, the small family hut just 40 meters (yards) from the seashore.

Sangeeta thought she would never see him again. The family dog saw to it that she did...

Here is another bit of news related to the tsunami:
https://archive.mail-list.com/naomiragen/msg00741.html
(From Naomi Ragen's newsletter archives)

QUOTE
"The Israeli delegation [in southeast Asia] has become famous," Meshi-Zahav told Yediot Acharonot. "All the other countries are looking for us, a small country with our relatively small delegation, to get advice."

The Israeli delegation, headed by Police Identification Department Head Shalom Tzarum, together with the Zaka volunteers, managed to do what no other country came close to doing. "We're the only national delegation here among the bodies," Meshi-Zahav said. "No other country has shown such concern for its citizens."

The government of Sri Lanka, the island country south of India whose death toll is nearing 30,000, sent a letter of thanks to Israel for its help. The Sri Lankan ambassador in the United Nations, sent a letter to his Israeli counterpart Danny Gillerman denying that his country had refused Israeli help for political reasons. "The Sri Lankan government and people," he wrote, "greatly appreciate the help that Israel granted us in this time of distress, in the form of food, medical equipment and rescue forces." He explained that the reason his government asked Israel to "temporarily delay the arrival of the 150-man team" was because the tsunami had destroyed the country's ability to host foreigners, including hotels, and had closed off the vicinity of the airport. "The Sri Lankan authorities are interested in leaving the door open for the arrival of additional Israeli experts when
necessary," the ambassador wrote.
