Michelle Obama Tells Chinese Students Internet Freedoms A Universal Right

U.S. first lady Michelle Obama told an audience of college students in the Chinese capital on Saturday that open access to information - especially online - is a universal right. But Obama stopped short of calling on China to offer its citizens greater freedoms on a visit in which she is expected to steer clear of more complicated political issues, but rather try to build goodwill through soft diplomacy. "It is so important for information and ideas to flow freely over the internet and through the media," Obama said told an audience of about 200 U.S. and Chinese students at Beijing's prestigious Peking University. The United States frequently criticizes China's human rights record, including its lack of protection of freedom of speech.

She also failed to mention that her husband has repeatedly looked into possibly taxing that right by hitting email with a government charge because letters going through the post office have decreased dramatically with the internet. The Democrats have been eager to tax on-line purchases. Not to mention, the government security agencies have been looking at a lot of it - [kind of] sounds like China doesnt it?

Having lived in China for a good while now, I can say that you can see most everything on the internet. However, they do block out some social media (Facebook, youtube, etc), VPN vendor sites and porn. If you really want to see all that, just get a VPN (You can find some...they haven't blocked all) and you can get that too. They all just realize that if they don't have a VPN, the government can pretty much monitor everything. Just like in the US, but we don't think they can in general.
