Plan B

Plan B, the so-called "Morning-after Pill," is currently stuck in FDA limbo regarding over-the-counter sale.

What would be the ramifications of selling it over the counter?


In my opinion, allowing unimpeded access to this pill is an invitation for young people to have casual sex without using condoms, thus spreading STDs like wildfire. Although there are plenty of education campaigns, the greatest deterrent to unprotected sex is the possibility of pregnancy. Take that away, and impulsive teens won't act responsibly.

Advocates say that this will reduce the number of abortions; yet Plan B blurs the abortion debate significantly. Does life start when the embryo is created, or when it embeds, or later? The more obscured this debate becomes, the more difficult it will be to define what is moral in the realm of abortion. Plan B essentially causes a very early miscarriage, in my view, and thus it should only be available by perscription. I see it as a beneficial solution for victims of rape or incest, but not as a moral alternative to planning ahead. Terminating a potential pregnancy, no matter how early, just because it was too inconvenient to use other methods of birth control, is immoral.
