What do you think about this Character Class in the Dungeon & Dragons or (AD&D) system of role-playing? Consider the following:

1. Fighting ability (attack skills, use of weapons)
2. Unique skills (thievery, bless, talk to animals, etc.)
3. Magical skills (ability to use and acquire magic)
4. Tendency to progress (easy to go up in levels)
5. Limitations (cannot carry or use certain objects)

Oddly enough I have never RPGed with anyone that wanted to play the role of Monk. I guess the idea of trusting more in your hand than in your sword was not very appealing, plus they are rather weak when first starting and become only a serious contender much later.

Monks also have a much more limited well of useful magic items they can use in comparison to most characters. On adventures GM's normally litter levels with armour, weapons, wands and magical staffs all of very limited value to a Monk

Monks are my second favorite class admittedly they are very weak in the early stages but as long as you master the use of ki you should be all right. In the latter stages of the monks development he becomes a near perfect warrior immune to all +3 weapons and below. A monk of a high level also becomes immune to charm and poison based attacks. If used correctly the monk is the most lethal melee fighter there is. A high level monks hands are classed as a +5 weapon.

Fighting ability:- A high level monk is second to none in melee combat but a low level monk is easy pickings for a low level fighter.

Unique skills:- A monks unique skill is the art of ki an energy that can be emitted through the body to attack enemys.

Magical skills:- Monks cannot use magic unless they are duel classed.

Tendency to progress:- Although a low level monk is very weak they level up quite quickly so it should not take long to become a formidable foe.

Limitations:- A monk is very limited to the weapons they can use, these are:-
A dagger
A staff
A katana (if given proficiency)

A monks style of combat is martial arts. Depending on the alignment different styles are used.

I played a mink once and got him to level ten when he met wit ha untimely death after sliding into a room from a trap and was confronted with a red dragon. Needless to say he was a nice snack.
