What's the matter, pay too little? Sounds like just enough for me to tango. He must be getting a better deal somewhere else or just has an all out hate for the Yankees.

Joe Torre rejected a $5 million, one-year contract to return as manager the New York Yankees on Thursday. |
First off I am not a fan of the Yanks.
But I can't blame Torre for rejecting the deal. There is no class in an organization that comes out in public announcing that they will fire someone for not performing. They should have just come to the man and stated in private. " We will not be extending your contract unless you win the first round of the playoffs." He would have known the expectations and either fulfilled them or not.
I can imagine my own feelings if my boss came in front of all the other employees and said "Hey everybody, if this guy doesn't do this or fulfill this, I'm firing him." Out of Self respect I might have quit right there (except that I need to support my Family, and finding a new Job is a little difficult, and I don't make as much as Joe Torre)
Why would I want to stay with a business that had no respect for me, regards my previous record as useless, and I knew there were other teams lining up to hire me at the rate I requested? Steinbrenner has always bugged me, and this is just another reason for me to be annoyed by him.
Actually, it is enough money and quite enough at that, but the problem is last year. Last year he was paid 8 million. His base pay would be like 5.5 million if he accepted the one year contract. Now there were scalers that would bring the pay back up to 8 million, but basically, that meant a World Series Title and a bit more. Bottom line, that is a 30% plus salary cut. If he takes this cut, doesn't it make him look a bit smaller or weak in front of all the other multimillionare players that are supposed to report to him? Bowing down and accepting this pay cut, could he really lead his team...could he force tough decisions on them when needed? Basically, this offer was made to get a desired result and they got it.
I am really going to be interested if the new manager will get a performance based package. Somehow, I bet they get a pretty good starting salary with the lack of experience and very little in scalers.
Also, I have a feeling this is just the start of a exodus of sorts from Gotham. I think NY will be lucky to retain more than half of their free agents over the summer.
