Jews Hate People Why
I am very interested to hear that Judea was not full of people practicing Judaism. Yes, Rome proper had few Jews, but I was always under the impression that Judea, which Pontius Pilate governed over at the time of Jesus' execution, was largely Jewish. As a matter of fact, I believe that in Roman history that they had wars with the Jews in Judea and that the Romans anointed certain Jews to a title called "King of the Jews". Well, since there were so few Jews as to my new understanding, these could hardly have been wars at all since there was virtually no one on the other side to fight and why have a "king" for such a small populous.
While not a anti-semite by any stretch of the imagination, please ask how Jesus ended up in Roman hands and while we are at it...ask yourself what a Sanhedrin is and what it had to do with Jesus. Was there a big Roman manhunt for Jesus? Perhaps it was Temple guards that apprehended Jesus? I cannot wait to see the evidence that this was a all out Roman effort to capture and punish Jesus of Nazareth for illegal teachings. Jean/Kristen, since you are currently studying Roman history, this should be at your fingertips and easy to source. Please do so, my education is lacking in this area. During my studies of this particular topic from the Roman side (basically, Pontius Pilate's records) I am also interested in when the Romans decided to go capture Jesus and who decided that he was a threat and when. I have always been under the impression through studying Roman history that Jesus was killed for Treason and not illegal teachings...who knew!
Me and a few other uneducated believe that Jesus was actually captured by the Temple Guards (we can review their motivation) and sentenced to blasphemy under the Sanhedrin (lead by Caiaphas, who interestingly was allowed the position by agreement with the Romans) and turned over to the Romans. In Mosaic Law, blasphemy is a charge punishable by death (usually stoning). However, since Judea was a satellite country under Roman control, they were not allowed to carry out these punishments and if needed would request them of the Roman Governor. That prefecture's governor was Pontius Pilate. He reviewed the case and since the charge was blasphemy (this didnt mean anything to the Roman government since they didnt believe in God either and it was a infraction of Jewish Law, which he could care less about) he did nothing and sent Jesus to be dealt with by Herod Antipas. Antipas is amused by Jesus, but that ends soon with beatings and he is sent back to Pilate. Pilate states that he sees no infraction requiring death. It is then that the leaders...Jewish Leaders...give Pilate the treason charge. This is all Pilate needs and the execution is on! Now, nowhere in there was a Roman manhunt to get Jesus. You will find nothing that says "his" teachings were illegal prior to his arrest because the Romans basically didnt know much about Jesus, fear Jesus nor particularly care about him as long as the tribute kept coming in from Judea and they accepted Roman Authority. By absolutely every account, he was handed over to the Romans by Jews.
Who is He? Well, HE, is not Roman and HE seems to refer to a particular person. Perhaps, Jesus is saying that Caiaphas, the High Priest and head of the Sanhedrin, is to blame or maybe even Antipas (if you believe this actually happened) who had a chance to deal with this before the decision to crucify. Either way, it surely doesnt sound like he is blaming all of the Jews of the land and their offspring and their offsprings future offspring...especially when the son does not inherit the sins of the father. So yes...saying the Jews killed Jesus is wrong. Saying a particular Jew or a few Jewish Leaders had a hand in the resulting crucifixion is quite fair.
It is said that Jesus was executed at the request of the Jewish Leader/Leaders and by all accounts this is accurate. The Barabbas decision and Pilate "washing his hands" are nice underscorings. You will find no issuing of a warrant of arrest or a manhunt on the Roman side for Jesus of Nazareth. However, to ignore the power and influence that the Roman Governor and threat of total Roman Rule had in the daily decisions of the Jewish Leaders is pure ignorance. We can say that the Sanhedrin turned over Jesus and requested his execution because they were jealous of his power with the people or we can as easily say that they turned him over and requested his execution because they were scared that the influence that he had with the people would eventually catch the attention of Rome and end up in total Roman Rule and a potential end to their way of life or existance altogether. You dont even have to believe in the Bible to see this. Jews were allowed to basically run the region with what at the time was minimal direction from Rome. That is how they got the Temple, because trust me the Romans had no desire to build a nice Temple for the Jews. They would much rather had had the money for another temple to Jupiter or another god of the time. However, to flagrantly disobey and denounce Roman Authority was assured a quick and heavy response from Rome. Rome was very well known for wiping out the adversary...for good...during these times. The presentation by the Jewish Leaders a the Roman Trial that Jesus was sent to rule Israel as King, as a direct royal descendant of King David, led the Jewish people to expect Jesus to kick out the Romans and re-establish Israel as an independent nation would obviously factor into Pilate's decision to grant the crucifixion and was the icing on the cake that lead to the signed decree.
Will you find any history book that say...
I, Pontius Pilate (because all manhunts in the prefecture would go through him) tracked down and summarily crucified Jesus of Nazareth for illegal teaching.
I dont think so. At least, I havent seen any that have...but your school may be different.
Will you find historical offerings that say that Jesus was presented to the Roman Governor by the Sanhedrin via Temple Guards? He was presented as a blasphemer tried by the Sanhedrin and was awaiting sentencing for the crime when a new charge of treason was added by a Jewish Leader or Jewish Leaders? Following the new charge, he was sentenced and summarily scourged and then crucified via decree of Pontius Pilate.
