Man if they press charges against him that would be brutal. I think 5 years with the Taliban was enough to let him know he shouldn't have AWOL if he did AWOL.

Obama: Bergdahl swap part of ending Afghan war
In an interview Friday with NBC Nightly News, President Obama said he has no regrets about releasing five Taliban prisoners from Guantanamo Bay captivity in exchange for captured U.S. Soldier Bowe Bergdahl. Obama said it is "Important for us to recognize that the transition process of ending a war is going to involve, on occasion, releasing folks who we may not trust but we can't convict." Ref. BBC
Poll faults Obama handling of Bergdahl exchange
Public opposition to the exchange of five Taliban prisoners for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has less to do with Bergdahl himself and more to do with how President Obama handled the transfer, according to a new USA TODAY/Pew Research Center poll. The poll shows 43% of Americans thought it was wrong for Obama to make the deal, compared with 34% who thought it was the right thing to do. Among veterans, 68% thought it was the wrong thing to do, while 16% thought it was right. Only 30% of those surveyed had a strong opinion of Bergdahl; 15% of respondents said they were sympathetic, and 15% said they were angry with Bergdahl. Ref. USAToday
My opinion on this topic is that in the time that he disappeared from his unit nothing was said or charges made towards him on desertion or AWOL that I have seen. So until I learn more of what went on there I will just say he was a POW that has now been returned to us.
As far as the trade of five leaders of a known terrorist organization for him I think we made a bad deal as they will not sit idle and will once again attack innocent people and kill them to make people afraid. I hope that someone does kill them since they are lot good guys.
