ST. GEORGE - Fundamentalist LDS Church leader Warren Jeffs has been sentenced to two consecutive terms of five years to life in prison for performing a child-bride marriage. The sentence was handed down this afternoon here in 5th District Court by Judge James Shumate. |
Jeffs is now an inmate at Utah State Prison
For the next several weeks, Jeffs will undergo an orientation process in prison that will determine what type of inmate he will be classified as, as well as where he will be housed. The Utah Department of Corrections has said Jeffs likely will be housed in maximum security.
"It will help maintain his security and safety," deputy corrections director Mike Haddon said Wednesday.

Well, he is now officially no longer the President of the FLDS. He has resigned.

Warren Jeffs is out as the president of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He resigned from his post the day he was sentenced to life in prison, but word of it was just released this afternoon. Jeffs' attorney sent out a very short and carefully worded statement saying that Warren Jeffs has resigned. But does this really mean Warren Jeffs is out of the picture as a leader of the polygamist sect, or is it a legal maneuver to try and eliminate liability as Jeffs and the FLDS Church are sued by his victim? The statement was released by Walter Bugden, who represented Jeffs in the criminal case on charges of rape as an accomplice for performing an underage marriage. Jeffs was convicted and sentenced on Nov. 20 to consecutive terms of five years to life in prison. The statement reads: "Mr. Jeffs has asked that the following statement be released to the media and to members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Mr. Jeffs resigned as President of the Corporation of the President of The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Inc., on November 20, 2007... |
Polygamist leader faces Ariz. charges

KINGMAN, Ariz. - Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs was handed over to Arizona authorities Tuesday to face sex charges stemming from the arranged marriages of two teenage girls to older relatives. He already has been convicted in Utah in connection with one of those cases, involving a 14-year-old girl. Deputies from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office took custody of Jeffs from Utah officials, sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter said. He was booked into the county jail, where he will be kept separate from other inmates, said sheriff's department Capt. Greg Smith. "Now it's our turn," Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard said. "I hope the message is very simple: the law applies to everybody, whether they're the head of a large religious group, or somebody who's not. It's a crime to abuse children, and there are no exceptions." Jeffs, leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, will plead not guilty to the Arizona charges Wednesday in a Kingman court, said defense attorney Mike Piccarreta. Jeffs, 52, is charged as an accomplice with four counts of incest and four counts of sexual contact with a minor in an indictment. Jeffs was sentenced in Utah to serve two consecutive terms of five years to life in prison. Smith has said that if Jeffs is convicted in Arizona he would have to finish his Utah sentence before doing time here |
