Are they the best all round team?

New York Yankees

Outside of the Bronx, the New York Yankees are probably the most hated team in Major League Baseball. Why are they hated so much? Because they win. The Yankees have an unmatched 26 World Series Championships, and the highest paid team in the MLB. Here is a rundown of their roster for 2006:

Alex Rodriguez 3B
Derek Jeter SS
Robinson Cano 2B
Jason Giambi 1B
Jorge Posada C
Hideki Matsui OF
Johnny Damon OF
Gary Sheffield OF
Bernie Williams DH

Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina, Jaret Wright and Carl Pavano SP
Mariano Rivera, Kyle Farnsworth RP

With the exception of Cano on 2nd, everyone else are superstars in their own right. Joe Torre has been the Manager of the team since 1996 and has brought 4 of the 26 championships to town himself. Every year you wonder what other big name could the Yankees bring in, and surprisingly enough, they find someone. This year it was Johnny Damon that came to the Yankees from arch-rivals Boston. The Yankees have started the year a dismal 7-7, but the season is very young, and I expect with the lineup they have, they will be making a serious run at the AL crown and possibly the World Series.

I can't stand teams that can buy themselves a championship due to the complete failure of the MLB to create a fair playing field. Everytime they lose its one more shred of joy I can get from baseball. They don't win a World Series in two years and suddenly their manager is on the chopping block. Thats one reason people hate the Yankees. If they don't win it all, they throw a fit and start threatening peoples jobs.

Hey, sports is a business and it has to be viewed as such. The Yankees are the Microsoft of the MLB. Of course, I'm not saying I agree with the decisions they have made in the past couple of years. It seems Steinbrenner has returned to what failed them in the 80's, trying to buy talent.

The rise of the current Yankee dynasty was built around homegrown talents such as Jeter, Posada, Williams and former heroes Pettite, Brosius, Kelly, and Soriano. The team needs to focus on their minor league talents and continue that success. A hodgepodge of expensive All-Stars have proven to be ineffective in building Championship teams.

How did Johnny Damon fare in his first appearance in Boston as a Yankee? 0-4. Plus the Yankees lost in the bottom of the 8th inning. I don't think the Red Sox nation could have wrote a better welcome to the prodigal son, Damon. It was funny to hear a quote from Damon when he was a Red Sox player, that said he would never go to the Yankees for money even though he knew they would be coming after him. In the end he left the Red Sox for $2 million more. Pretty pathetic if you ask me.

Who would have thought the Yankees beating Detroit would be headline news someday? I sure didn't! However, Detroit has been stellar this year, and have the best record in the league at the moment. So, I suppose if New York could beat them, it is news. Hooray for the Yankees, they bought themselves a team that can beat the Tigers! spock.gif

QUESTIONS START TO SWIRL ABOUT TORRE'S FUTURE

NEW YORK (AP) -- Now in his 12th season as manager of the New York Yankees, Joe Torre has been on the hot seat before. That's what happens when you work for George Steinbrenner -- no matter how many World Series rings you've won.
