Global air travel begins to slow
Finland News

Internationally the industry hasn?t fully recovered from the recession, but the Finnish market remains strong. INTERNATIONAL air travel is weakening in both the passenger and cargo markets. The volume of freight traffic has shrunk while the rate of increase for passengers has slowed. The Finnish industry is showing some similar tendencies, but overall the domestic market is much healthier than the global situation. ?The industry is living in several different realities,? says Tony Tyler, Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). ?The passenger business is doing better than cargo. But regional growth patterns are shifting.?

Finland News

Minister of Foreign Affairs Erkki Tuomioja argues that the Finnish social model and international reputation as a progressive society cannot be safeguarded by simply pointing to the country?s achievements in international welfare and educational rankings. The country as a whole must also face up to the task of addressing the sources of social discontent in light of the harms it can cause.

?The Finns? face first serious challenge since election victory
Finland News

The comment that controversial MP Jussi Halla-aho (The Finns) made last week about the need for a military junta in Greece has caused a minor crisis in his party, with some commentators suggesting that The Finns? leader Timo Soini is losing his grip on the party. In the past months, The Finns have been plagued by numerous scandals involving comments made by its new MPs, with particular attention being drawn by Halla-aho and Teuvo Hakkarainen. The latter has on different occasions used the word neekeri (literally ?negro? but both pejorative and offensive) while the former has continued to cause outrage with his notoriously provocative postings on the internet.

Sushi is on a roll
Finland News

The expansive growth of sushi restaurants in Helsinki means that quality varies from place to place. In our latest comparative piece on the capital?s restaurants, we put four of the city?s fish and rice eateries to the test. WHEREAS five years ago, you could hardly find a sushi restaurant in Finland for love nor money, these days ? at least in larger cities and Helsinki in particular ? there seems to be more of them than you can shake a pair of chopsticks at. While this is great news for rice and seaweed lovers, some of us are starting to wonder if the Finn?s appetite for raw fish can possibly support this many establishments.

Israel and Palestine: it takes two for peace
Finland News

The approach of criticising only Israel and calling for economic sanctions against it is not helping the Palestinian cause ? while neighbouring countries ignore their own human rights, writes Gilad Sperling. Lately there have been calls in Finland to boycott the Israeli military industry and to stop any weapon deals with Israel. They justify this call to boycott by Israel?s occupation of Gaza and the West bank, the security wall in the West Bank, the Israeli blockade and attacks against Gaza.
