According to Minister of the Interior Päivi Räsänen (CD) the millions of euro set to be cut from fire and rescue departments will not results in longer waiting periods for emergency services, even though in 2016 the number of fire and rescue departments will drop to half of its current 22.   Räsänen explains the cutbacks are due to the difficult economic situation that ?necessitates action?.

Schedule For Further Cuts Remains Wide Open

During the Parliament's plenary session on Wednesday, Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen (NCP) refused to shed light on the timetable, but did hint that the measures could be implemented intermittently.

Proposal Would Devote Half Of Mannerheimintie To Pedestrians

Forty-eight councillors of the City of Helsinki have expressed their support for a motion lodged by Hannu Oksala (Greens) to designate half of the Mannerheimintie road for pedestrian use. Oksala proposes that the eastern half of the city's artery be transformed into a promenade over the roughly 600 metre stretch between the Postikatu and Eteläesplanadi roads.With the centre of the road still designated for trams, cars would only be left with one lane in each direction.
