Well I had a nice surprise waiting for me when I got home early this morning. I found that I had all kinds of water rushing into my basement. It was a nice ice cold water that was almost two feet deep. I checked my sump pump and it was running as hard as it could but there was too much water coming in for it to keep up with.
At first I thought it was a water main rupture. I had the city come out and turn the water off to my house. This did not slow the water at all. The water guy, my dad, and my neighbor all did not smell any waste so it was not the sewer line that had ruptured.
We all came to the conclusion that it is the ground water table. Somehow it found a way into my house and now I am stuck with getting it out of my basement. I had a second sump pump that I had on a shelf. I attached a garden hose to it and set it in the water. With the two sump pumps going I was finally making the water leave quicker than it was coming in. It is nearly six hours later and I still have a good foot to 14 inches of water in my basement. It is still pouring in but the sump pumps will get it down to nothing soon I hope. I do not have any hot water since the gas water heater is under water. I am hoping that by the time I head to work today that I am able to restart the water heater.
I have items of value in my basement but they are up on concrete ledges that are three and a half feet up. My Main furnace is in the basement but the heating element (burner) is three feet off the floor. The only thing it really effected is the water heater which has a heating element just six inches off the floor. I am just glad I caught it before it got too much deeper. I just love walking around in the ice cold water checking on the pumps as it is.
Having your basement floor slope to a low spot and putting in a below grade hole to place a sump pump is the best thing for a basement. I do not like basement drains as they can get plugged or back up. Having a sump pump to pump the water up and out of the house is the way to go. For the five + years I have lived there I have had no problem with just one sump pump. I have the feeling that if this continues I will have to rethink my sump pump placement.
