That is what I said to my wife a week ago. Just let the US Beef in and dont buy it. You get the free trade and you still eat Korean Beef. She told me that the concern is more about what beef the restaurants use. They really dont have to tell you what beef they are using, so the concern is that they will all switch to the cheaper US Beef.
Koreans are pretty passionate people. They like demonstrating. If you read the newspapers, they are always demonstrating or striking about something. Edited: Vincenzo on 6th Jun, 2008 - 2:05pm
I am sure the restaurants will use it as USA corn fed beef is considered one of the top cuts by many restaurants. Not my forte as I dislike corn feed animals makes the meat strong in my opinion.
I think the reality is if it is cheaper then the local farmers will feel it hard. I have to question are they overlooking an opportunity to export a different crop to the States.
Asians in general do not like the same type of meat cut that the US/Western population likes. They do like a good bit of fat in their meat and consider it desirable, where as in the US and other western countries, we like a very lean piece of meat with little fat around the outside. So honestly, the US Beef is not considered the best in Korea, Japan, Taiwan or many other countries in asia.
The reality is that the US found mad cow disease in their livestock and it went undetected for some time. How much time that is is debatable.
The Korean people do not trust the governments of Korea or the US to ensure the safety of the beef, so they trust only the stocks that have not had any cases...the Korean Beef. This is why you see the demonstrations...that and the fact they really do like to demonstrate and have had it with their government for quite some time.
It is pretty interesting how this is being covered by the media inside versus outside the country and people's perception of it. I was just in Korea for the last 3 days. I got to see some riots in Seoul about the US Beef import. The news showed basically college students attacking the police, destroying police vehicles and when they sufficiently pushed the police far enough...they got a beat down, hose down or smoked down as a result. Right after that they claimed police brutality!
Several in the new president's cabinet have offered to resign their post over the dispute, but so far the new president has not accepted any resignations.

In talking with my father and brother-in-law, I got a pretty interesting view point. They watched the same video and talked about college kids just finding something to do to get out of finals week. They also told me that most of the protestors are college students or faculty and that they are lazy and this gets them out of work.
I am not sure that that is true, but it is a view point that is not being covered by many in media! Also, the police put up with WAY more stuff that they would in the states before they have to use force of ANY kind.
I had noticed when I was over there in Korea for well over two years that yes the college students were plain lazy. They would protest anything if it meant getting out of school and not having to take a test. While I was over there in the 80's before the olympics I can see from your comments Vincenzo that nothing has changed in the past 20 years. I know the KNP put up with a lot and hopefully the students will relax someday.
Maybe the US beef is not as bad as some are thinking?
