Debates Presidential Why

The purpose is a little obvious. They are to give the candidates the opportunity to challenge each other on the issues. They also allow the media, or public or whoever is sponsoring the debate to ask some questions. How tough the questions are depends upon how much input the candidates have beforehand. While debates can shed some light on where a candidate stands I don't think the final decision on who to vote for should be based on the outcome. Some candidates do better in different forums, that does not necessarily correlate to who will do the better job.

As for debates being required - no. They are not required at all.
