Former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn has expressed concern about the potential legal exposure of his son, Michael Flynn Jr., who, like his father, is under scrutiny by special counsel Robert Mueller, multiple sources familiar with the matter tell CNN.

Flynn's concern could factor into decisions about how to respond to Mueller's ongoing investigation. The special counsel is looking into Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign as well as the business dealings of key campaign advisers to President Donald Trump. Ref. CNN.

Former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty Friday to lying to the FBI about conversations with Russia's ambassador and disclosed that he is cooperating with the special counsel's office.

Flynn is the first person inside President Donald Trump's administration to be reached by special counsel Robert Mueller's probe, and the developments are a sign that the investigation is intensifying.

According to an FBI statement, Flynn communicated with then-Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak after being asked by a senior Trump transition official to find out how foreign governments stood on a coming UN Security Council resolution about Israel. The prosecutors did not name any transition officials. Ref. CNN.

So he talked to a Russia about a UN resolution and now he's fired for colluding with the Russians? That's like getting arrested for indecent exposure because your skirt blew up in the wind.

We all knew this was going to happen but what we really want to know is if this is big enough to lead to an impeachment of Trump like the Dems are hoping.

The White House's chief lawyer told President Donald Trump in January he believed then-national security adviser Michael Flynn had misled the FBI and lied to Vice President Mike Pence and should be fired, a source familiar with the matter said Monday.

The description of the conversation raises new questions about what Trump knew about Flynn's situation when he urged then-FBI Director James Comey to drop the investigation into Flynn and whether anyone in the White House, including the President himself, attempted to obstruct justice. Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russians, a probe led by Comey until Trump fired him.

White House counsel Donald McGahn told Trump that based on his conversation with then-acting Attorney General Sally Yates, he believed Flynn had not told the truth in his interview with the FBI or to Pence, the source said. McGahn did not tell the President that Flynn had violated the law in his FBI interview or was under criminal investigation, the source said. Ref. CNN.

Trump lawyer floated idea of pardons for Manafort and Flynn, NYT reports

President Donald Trump's lawyer, John Dowd, floated the possibility last year with lawyers for former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort that the President might issue pardons for both men, The New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing three individuals with knowledge of the discussions.

The conversations happened as special counsel Robert Mueller "Was building cases against both men," the Times reported, which raises "Questions about whether the lawyer, John Dowd, was offering pardons to influence their decisions about whether to plead guilty and cooperate in the investigation" into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Dowd resigned from the President's legal team earlier this month. In a statement to the Times, Dowd denied the report. "There were no discussions. Period," he said, according to the Times. "As far as I know, no discussions." Ref. CNN.

Robert Mueller asks for no prison time for Michael Flynn, citing his 'substantial assistance' in the Russia probe

Special counsel Robert Mueller told a federal court Tuesday that former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn has given "Substantial assistance" to the Russia investigation and should not get jail time.

Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators on December 1, 2017, becoming the first high-ranking Trump adviser to agree to formally cooperate with the special counsel's probe.

He is at the center of what's believed to be an investigation into whether Trump obstructed justice. He has also been scrutinized by the intelligence community, and likely Mueller, for his contacts with high-ranking Russians before and during his short time in the administration. Ref. CNN.

Robert Mueller documents dispute that former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn was tricked into lying by FBI. The new court filings Friday come after Flynn’s attorneys suggested that the FBI duped President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser by not warning him about the criminal consequences for lying to agents during the interview in which Flynn has now acknowledged falsely denying that his conversation with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak included a discussion of Russia sanctions.
