Look at the JST of Luke17:36-38:
QUOTE |
And they answered and said unto him, Where Lord shall they be taken. And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is gathered; or, in other words, whithersoever the saints are gathered, thither will the eagles be gathered together; or, thither will the remainder be gathered together. This he spake, signifying the gathering of his saints; and of angels descending and gathering the remainder unto them; the one from the bed, the other from the grinding, and the other from the field, whithersoever he listeth. |
QUOTE |
1) Where are they taken? Physically and spiritually? |

All throughout recorded history there have been groups of people, some small and some large, that have been directed by the Lord to withdraw themselves from a larger wicked society in order to avoid suffering from impending catastrophic disasters. A partial list of such known groups looks like this: GROUP CURRENT OR IMPENDING DISASTER Enos Wars and bloodshed, secret combinations Enoch Increased wars and bloodshed, secret combinations Noah Destruction of all of the wicked by flood Jaredites Wickedness Abraham First time...Wickedness in Ur, fled to save life Second time... famine, moved from Haran Third time....famines, moved to Egypt Lot Destruction of Sodom & Gomorah by fire from heaven Israel/Joseph Terrible famines (moved to Egypt) Moses Continued slavery under Egyptians Lehi Destruction of Jerusalem because of wickedness Nephi Destruction by hand of wicked brothers Mosiah I War & wickedness... prophesied by Jacob (Jacob 3:4) Mulek Destruction of Jerusalem Alma I Destruction at the hands of wicked king Noah Slavery under the hands of Amulon/Lamanites Limhi/Gideon War with the Lamanites Righteous of Amonihah Complete destruction by the Lamanites in one day Church in Jerusalem 70 AD, complete destruction by the Romans Of course, let us not forget how many times the members of the Church moved in the early days of the restoration. It has been noted that the final removal of the Church to the Salt Lake Valley allowed the Church members to escape the terrible devastations that occurred during the civil war. Joseph Smith From Palmyra to Fayette, increased persecution Joseph & Saints D&C 38:28-33 From Fayette to Kirtland, increasing persecution Church members From Independence. Forced removal by mobs. The Church Wickedness, apostasy, persecution in Kirtland, Ohio moved to Far West. The Church Far West, persecution, forced removal by militia/mobs The Church Nauvoo to Salt Lake. Persecution, approaching mobs/militias Also, it should be pointed out that those who heeded the call and left Europe/Britain to gather with the saints in Utah, missed out on a lot of wars, devastations, etc. that later occurred there. In addition, the scriptures indicate that there are many such similar groups that we have no record of, at least at this point in time: "For behold, the Lord God has led away from time to time from the house of Israel, according to his will and pleasure. And now behold, the Lord remembereth all them who have been broken off, wherefore he remembereth us also." |
I thought on that subject before and found one interesting thing.
In Matt. 24 the Lord speaks of His Second Coming.
Then in Matt. 25 we read the parable of the ten virgins and the talents.
Those that participated on the wedding were the wise, prepared with extra oil for their lamps.
The one that adds to the talents he is given will be accepted, the one that has not added to the only talent he is given is called unprofitable servant and was cast out.
In my opinion the people that prepare spiritually and use their talents to add to the well being of all others upon the Earth will be taken or saved before the Earth is burned at His Second Coming.
Interesting comments, thank you.
There are clearly a number of symbols in these verses which seem to all be 1 conversation on the same subject. Here are a list of the symbols that could be interpreted literally or symbolically:
- Lightning
- Heaven
- Kingdom of God
- Day of the Son of Man
- the body or carcase (Matt. 24:28)
- the eagles
What are the definitions of these symbols? Do you see other symbols I missed? Does someone have a way to get the actual definition of these words? A concordinance or a lexicon, etc?

Roger K. Young wrote in his pamphlet, "Tent Cities & Apostasy in the Last Days: |
I watched the Movie "Left Behind" and its bad film. I believe those who are taken are taken both spiritually and physically. AS to the Kingdom of God, I think it is where God resides. But what is the meaning of rapture? It could be like what happened to the 3 Nephites and Elijah.
I have also heard that prior to the second coming that an angel wil come to every faithful person in a vision to tell them to prepare to go to the a place in America, the valley of adam-ondi-ahman. Also found in D&C 107:53-57 Edited: Lephisto on 13th Sep, 2008 - 7:56am
I agree with Lephisto. I have read the same about the gathering that will take place at Adam-ondi-Ahman and in my opinion what Daniel 7 said about the transfer of responsibility from the Ancient of days to the Son of Man will occur there as well.
Regarding the definitions, my suggestion is to check out the Bible Dictionary and all the other sources at Kingdom of Heaven.
If you can, find the book called "Answers to Gospel Questions". Very easy to read and a lot of things can be learned there. It helped me when I was learning English and about the Church.
The honest seeker always finds the answers and I can help you as much as I am able to.

Or he could just use our in house Bible Search link which is at the top of this page: Source 2
I am not sure, is this Thread more about the "Left Behind" work or comparing Doctrine with it? I had to search the meaning of it...
QUOTE (Wikipedia) |
The story begins with a young journalist, Cameron "Buck" Willams, reporting from Israel concerning the new technology in which food will grow in almost anywhere, thus, he calls it a miracle, but a miracle man has created. Suddenly, thousands of Russian jets and missles fly over them, attempting to completely destroy Israel. However, God destroys them with his almighty power, thus fulfilling his promise in protecting Israel. |
I am definitely interested more in the doctrine. Notice how we quickly glance over such scriptures that seem either obvious or mysterious and lean on the conclusions of others. I believe there is a mystery here that will change our view of a multitude of teachings we commonly hear in church and our understanding of the events related to the so called "Rapture".
Try these interpretations for the symbols:
- Lightning - "Lightning just struck my brain!" - Mr. Smee in Hook: Inspiration, revelation, receiving pure intelligence or light suddenly
- Heaven - The sky or great open space where the lightning is able to strike freely. Not earth or base, but signifying higher thought, open and uplifting. The mind that receives revelations.
- Kingdom of God - Still a mystery...any thoughts
- Day of the Son of Man - Still a mystery...any thoughts
- the body or carcass (Matt. 24:28) - Still a mystery...any thoughts
- the eagles - Still a mystery...any thoughts
What is the Kingdom of God that cannot be observed when it comes? If you can see it like a gathering of people then it doesn't fit. That would rule out what many think the kingdom of God is for example tent cities or gatherings of people or communities all of which can be observed.
The scripture also tells us where the kingdom of God is. The exact location! And it doesn't say Salt Lake City or Missouri or Illinois, it says,

20 ¶ And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: 21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you. Luke 17:20-21 |
