National consumer confidence dipped in May

After rising in April, the Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index dropped in May. Using market conditions in 1985 to represent a score of 100, the index stood at 60.8 at the end of May, down from 66 at the end of April. The Nielson Co, an information and analysis service vendor, performed the random-sampling study. Data sampling had a cut-off data of May 18.

Unemployment, housing prices put Jacksonville in economic bottom 20 nationwide

Stubborn unemployment and dipping housing prices placed the Jacksonville metropolitan area in the bottom 20 in economic performance in the first quarter when ranking the nation?s 100 largest cities, according to a report released today. According to the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program?s latest MetroMonitor, the Jacksonville metropolitan area ranks badly in two key areas: the one year change in housing prices, where it came in 94th out of 100, and the one-quarter change in employment, where it ranked 92nd.

Sea Star Line will stop service from Philadelphia

Jacksonville-based Sea Star Line announced today it will stop shipping cargo from Philadelphia this month after the service could not generate enough business. The suspension of service will be effective July 22. "We have invested millions of dollars in this service over the last 16 months," said Steve Hastings, president of Sea Star Line. "The decision to suspend our service from Philadelphia was a very difficult one." The Philadelphia service is part of a route serving Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
