Chris Johnson knows what a lot of people are saying about him. Well, the New York Jets running back is listening - and can't wait to silence the critics. Johnson was signed Wednesday to a two-year deal after he was released by the Tennessee Titans on April 7. He said there were other teams interested, but New York was his first - and, it turned out, only - visit.

NFL Plans To Look At Bigger Playoffs Longer PATs (Yahoo Sports)
NFL Related News

The NFL will discuss expanded playoffs at the owners' meetings next month in Atlanta. Commissioner Roger Goodell told a gathering of Associated Press Sports Editors on Thursday that a vote is uncertain on the proposal to add two teams to the postseason. ''We want to make sure we do it in the right way.'' The NFL also will experiment with snapping the ball from the 15-yard line on extra points in the first two weeks of the preseason to make them more challenging. Blandino added that veteran referees Scott Green and Ron Winter have retired, and will be replaced by Craig Wrolstad and Ronald Torbert.

Ravens Rice Is ashamed Sorry For Assault Case (Yahoo Sports)

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice pleaded not guilty Thursday to assault charges stemming from an incident with his then-girlfriend in an Atlantic City casino elevator. His lawyer said Rice is ''ashamed'' and ''sorry'' about his conduct but would not specify exactly what Rice did. If not, prosecutors have offered Rice a plea bargain that would spare him jail time if he participates in anger management counseling. ''He's ashamed of his conduct and he's sorry for what he did,'' attorney Michael Diamondstein told reporters outside the courthouse.

No surprise: Clowney is the Texans' man. But Thursday's first pick of the NFL draft didn't come without some intrigue about how it would all turn out. 50 Senators To NFL: Change Redskins Racist Name (Yahoo Sports)
NFL Related News

Half the U.S. Senate urged NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday to change the Washington Redskins' name, saying it is a racist slur and the time is ripe to replace it. In one letter, 49 senators cited the NBA's quick action recently to ban Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life after he was heard on an audio recording making offensive comments about blacks. They said Goodell should formally push to rename the Redskins. ''We urge you and the National Football League to send the same clear message as the NBA did: that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports,'' read the letter, which did not use the word ''Redskins.'' Sen. Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, wrote his own letter saying he doesn't believe that retaining the Redskin name ''is appropriate in this day and age.'' He described himself as ''one of your great fans for both the game and you personally.'' The letters come at a time of growing pressure to change the team name, with statements in recent months from President Barack Obama, lawmakers of both parties and civil rights groups.
