Here is another, more current article discussing exactly what we have been discussing.  I find it particularly interesting that the author says almost the same that Tenaheff and LDS_Forever have said.

QUOTE
Jessica Lynch says she simply wasn't the GI Jane superstar that desperate White House and Pentagon flacks morphed her into last March when the battle to take Baghdad was briefly bogged down in the desert.

True, Lynch wasn't the fighting action figure extolled by a gullible press corps that gobbled up the Rove boys' Pentagon-processed baloney. But the way this little wisp of a girl has stood up to the world's biggest propaganda machine makes her a hero in my book. Telling the truth had to take at least a bellyful of that tried-and-true West Virginia moral courage.

The whole article is very good.

Nighhawlk, thanks for the link of the article, it was very interesting. I'm glad the girl is honest to admit all what she said really happened, that shows a lot of integrity from her part.

G.I. Jane - Women Soldiers History & Civil Business Politics

When military women were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, there were likely many fears and worries on their minds. Combat, chemical weapons, terrorist attacks. But rape by a fellow soldier? That probably didn't occur to them.

In the last year and a half, more than 120 military women have reported that they were sexually assaulted by fellow soldiers in the Central Command area, which includes Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan. In February, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld ordered an investigation into this matter. That report has just been released. It concludes that the military lacks systems for accountability, that victims often have difficulty gaining access to services and support, and that commanders are often insensitive to victims needs and uninformed about how to handle claims.

NOTE: This is not about Iraq, this is about the abuse that women may be experiencing in the US Military.

Update:

Back during World War II, the women that served in the armed forces were given different names, WAVES, WACS. If they weren't nurses, there were very few jobs in the military they could hold, and they certainly were kept far from combat. Today, the names they are given are very familiar, soldier, military police, hero, casualty. I think it's fair to say that the U.S. military could not function without the tens of thousands of women who currently serve. And yes, among those pictures of the abuse in that prison in Iraq, are women soldiers.

And yet, women are still supposed to stay away from combat if at all possible. Women are still prohibited from serving in front-line infantry units, or armor. But the nature of war has changed. Women pilots fly combat missions. And women in other types of units, engineers, military police, intelligence, you name it, all face the dangers of combat in Iraq these days. There are no front lines as such, every soldier faces the same dangers. Jobs that were once thought of as being safely in the rear are no longer. And how has the presence of so many women affected the military?

I often wonder if women who serve in the military for such long periods and especially in a war environment, lose their feminity and become more 'tom-boyish'. I often wonder how they handle personal hygiene, like time of the month and so on... it must be dreadfully uncomfortable.

I don't think being in the military makes you more tomboyish. There are many jobs in the military just like in civilian life. When we enlist, we have some choice as to what we choose for a job. Those who are more "tomboyish" might select jobs that are more like truck driver or mechanic, but this didn't make them "tomboyish" they already were.

I know many women who have been in the military, many in the Marine Corps and they certainly don't lose their feminity.

As far as handling "that time of the month." They still don't get sent directly to the front lines so there are some kind of bathroom facilities available. I am sure it isn't pleasant but as humans we adjust as necessary.

I agree with Tena, I don't think the military make any woman tomboy, the thing is that some women were already tomboys before joining the military.

Let me see...I spent seven years in the US Army, first as a patient admin specialist, then as a combat medic. I am not bragging, but stating a fact that I have a medics badge and a purple heart, and was put in for a bronze star (but i don't know what became of that..one of these days i really need to look it up.)

First of all the movie pissed me off cus GI JANE is an ARMY term and she was going for the NAVY seal...yeesh! other than that, there are no navy seals or army rangers or green berets that are female. period. if a woman can pass every single requirement a man could without lowering of any standards at all period, then i would have no problem with it..but i don't see it happening in the near future at all.

that being said, there are many skills and qualifications and places for a woman in the armed services. i wont say that women don't belong on the front line..be kinda hypocritical cus i was there, but i will say that i just can't see a woman being a grunt..the long marches, the heavy loads, the upper body strength required.

when i was a medic and at the top of my form, i could haul a man over my shoulder and carry him to safety...lord knows i can't do it now, but i could do it then and did it when i had too..i also brought a slighly more (imho) compassionate persepective to being a medic..such as being able to hold hands of the dying who thought i was there mother..something tells me that probably didn't happen as often with male medics.

I am very proud of my time in service. i am also proud of having been a part of the US ARMY. I think women can do more and more things these days and that is good, but i don't think that women belong in certain roles for purely physical reasons.

Congress May Limit Combat Roles for Women

WASHINGTON - The military would need congressional approval before putting women in new direct combat roles under a bill approved by a House committee, its Republican sponsors say. But Democrats said it was unclear whom the provision would affect and argued it could drastically impact the way the services operate, especially in wartime.
