Bad Good Carnival

What the hell? I feel like adding dialect here but will compose myself. Carnival is the best thing in Trinidad and Tobago, Only thing bad about it is what you all want to make look bad. Even we president does jump up and he has the highest office in the land.

Carnival - Good or Bad? Caribbean / Tobago & Trinidad

Well, that time of the year is here again and Trinis are spending in fetes and costumes like never before. Even though it is reported there is a slight decrease in the purchase of costumes, recession has not affected Trinis when is time to party.

Rather off topic, but...
The police commisioner said they will make sure there are police offers all the time, everywhere. And the question for me is always the same: Why for Carnival only? rolleyes.gif

Carnival - Good or Bad?

Today in the Express, Professor Courtenay Bartholomew wrote an excellent article about Kiddie's Carnival and its impact on the culture in Trinidad. He also made a comparison about Carnival in Trinidad, in Brazil and the high percentages of HIV.

international QUOTE
To the best of my knowledge, Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil are the only countries in the world where there is a street carnival for children. Think about that! In fact, there are many similarities in our cultures (unfortunately).

Like T&T, Brazil, especially Rio de Janeiro, has a high crime rate, largely in poor areas controlled by drug dealers, and as of 2007 the homicide rate was nearly 30 victims per week. This is the same Brazil where, by the end of 2007, 730,000 people were living with HIV/AIDS. Once more, like T&T with respect to the Caribbean, Brazil is the country with the largest number of HIV-infected people in the South American continent. Coincidence or same cause and effect?

I have been to Rio several times and theirs is a very liberal culture. For example, about 45 million condoms are handed out every month with increased quantities for the carnivals, which are linked to increased sexual activity. But it is also said that some carnival bands in T&T are known to include a pack of condoms with their costumes, which, by the way, could comfortably fit into the condoms!

Now, traditionally the queen of the carnival samba parade in Rio is said to have the role of motivator and of being a sex symbol that inspires the dancers to do better. In fact, in 2009 an exotic dancer held that role. That said, a New York Times article of February 14, 2010 read: "Given the sexual overtones of the festival, child protection advocates accused a samba troop of child exploitation by putting a pint-sized dancing queen at the head of a 3,200-strong samba band in the competition at Rio's carnival." The article continued: "Just before 1.30 a.m (I did say "a.m.") on carnival Monday morning, seven-year-old Julia Lira, dressed in a glittery bikini and a midriff-baring top, was escorted by her parents and began to dance. Her mother says that she loves Beyonce." In fact, interestingly, Beyonce came straight from Rio to Trinidad.

The children's samba schools of Rio started in the early 80s, but the Red Cross Kiddies" Carnival began here in 1958, long before the children's schools in Rio. In the beginning it was truly a kiddies" event, portraying appropriate children's themes, however, as Canute Spencer confirmed to me last week, it was in 1976 that children's bands began to parade onthe streets. Even at that time there were those who had concerns about that, but never was it expected that it would become the extravaganza that we saw this year.

During the previous week there were those who were also critical of the Junior Calypso Monarch competition and about what they described in local parlance as "force-ripe" children, mainly girls, some with high-heels on stage, parroting the motions and antics of the adult calypsonians. Yet we heard a top government official say on stage that such competitions "improve self-confidence and self-esteem." Really? And so, may God bless our nation!....

Carnival Good Bad - Page 4

I was reading in the Newsday how this new government plans to create a "free band" called "The People's Band". Basically, anyone who has a costume (old, new or homemade) can join the band for free.

I wonder how they will handle the security risks since it's going to be "free"? Also where are they getting all this money from? I thought the treasury was empty...
