Violence & Sex in Games - Page 17

Most of the issues regarding the role of sex and violence in video games are societal. Game makers have noted which games tend to sell best, and they make the games that they think will cater to the largest audience. That's just good marketing. The game ratings does rein in how far they can go, which prevents outright pornography from being available in game form (Except for on the Internet, of course).

Blaming the game designers is foolish. They are merely providing a product, satisfying a demand. When the next Call of Duty with ultra-realistic graphics and throat-slitting visuals breaks every record for launch-day sales, it's merely affirming what many of us suspect: people have a craving for this kind of entertainment.

Of course, placing the blame for this at the feet of video games is a bit foolish. There is plenty of evidence of this same base need in other venues of entertainment. Music, sports, television, movies, the Internet and literature are full to the brim with sex and violence. Video games are merely a litmus test to see what people want and what they pay attention to. It's all an evolved version from gladiator games and prostitution, which human culture has had a love/hate relationship with for a long time. You need to change the culture before you can excise these element from games. Can humanity get rid of these basic human desires? I can't really speculate. I believe, however, that the ratings system is probably the best system we have of limiting potentially objectionable material from children, and if adults want "Adult entertainment", they will find it.

I don't think it is correct to put the full blame on the purchaser. Game manufacturers can have an agreement about drawing the line somewhere. While I understand that adults can choose their entertainment the thing is children are getting hold of these game from everywhere. Its interactive, they are 'living' the violence and it is feeding the brain with something more than just English and math lessons.

Honestly I believe that violence in games can get a little excessive, but also, the games that are violent to that extent need to be bought by an adult, so if a child is playing it then that child 'should' be mature enough to know that it is just a game and not part of reality. If the child isn't mature enough to understand the difference then it is more the parent/guardian's failure to teach them the difference that causes the issues more than the game itself. The sex in games is, at least from what I can think of, unnecessary to be actually depicted in games. Games like Dragon Age: Origins has sex in the game but it isn't seen, they go from the seen of the characters talking before, to after, which works because it gets the point across for the story without the unnecessary graphics.

I have no problem with either. If you cannot recognize reality from a story, you have some issues. The same applies with books or fantasy in general, does that mean that they are the same at making us do bad/unethical things?

E.g. In the original Sleeping Beauty, the king that meets her sleeping, he rapes her. In the little Mermaid, the Prince marries the witch and she commits suicide, jumping from the castle to the sea where she becomes foam in the water. Etc

The problem is that society wants the violence and sex. Profit dictates that you fulfill a need in order to make money otherwise you go out of business. There are no morale obligations here because if you don't do it someone else will.

Unfortunately Marshal is correct, no matter how many limitations are put on it as long as the masses want something companies will find a way to give it to them, because in the end that is what companies are for, they are there to make money, morality plays a minuscule if not non-existent part in it.

It is correct that if a child has access to material that is not suitable for its age, it is the parents fault and lack of discipline/education that they give it to him/her.

Violence is a part of Nature and we cannot avoid it. But I prefer, as we are a "Logical" species, to have violence in a fake world than in the real one.

Morality is different in each society, even in the same country.

At the end of the day game creators can still show some restraint by focusing on quality rather than using sex and violence as the main selling point.
