Winning People Over with Arguments - Page 2

There is no possible way you can change someone's way of thinking. If they think they are wrong, then they will make the step to change. People do not change other people, but surely can inspired someone to do so.

Regards to the topic of winning people over arguments it depends on the kind of individual you are talking with. If the person is a person who loves to learn then he/she may listen and like Maicman said walk away enlighted somehow. But if the person is ignorant then it does not matter what you say or do, you will not be able to win that argument, is a lost cause.

If a person is "ignorant" of the specifics involved within the topic being debated, then the debate may actually serve to help them learn. Now, if the person is "stupid", then there is no point, they are a lost cause.

Now, INHO, debate is a very important way of sharing information. I know that I have learned ALOT through honest, constructive debate down through the years, both by participating, and by just listening and paying attention. I would see where most people would view a debate as a fight, and consentrate more on who's winning rather than what is being said, but when used the correct way, and when received by the right people, it's very effective.

Let me clarify what I meant by "ignorant". I did not mean the common concept of a person who does not know a particular issue. I meant by "ignorant" as someone who does not know andhe does not want to learn either, who basically makes you waste time because their refutal have no basis yet they are not willing to open their minds and learn from others who may be more experienced on the field being discussed.

Anyways, it seems like our disagreement was merely a word-association misunderstanding. Thank you for explaining.
