Sumo: Takanohana continues on after his resignation is declined Local Japanese News In English
Takanohana, a former grand champion and a member of the Japan Sumo Association board, who made an attempt to resign at an executive board meeting the previous night said on Monday he will continue with his duties.
Takanohana had asked to resign at the meeting after his calls to lighten the punishment of former ozeki Kotomitsuki were rejected by the board members. But the JSA board did not accept his resignation.
Kotomitsuki and former stablemaster Otake, who were mired in an illegal gambling scandal that has exposed the ancient sport's ties to organized crime, were fired by the board Sunday. Kotomitsuki bet on baseball games, which is alleged to provide a source of funding for the Japanese mafia, or "yakuza." (AP)
