Thanks for that, some here think that people of Iraq are in general happy to see the US, but in muy opinion I do not think so, at least not to the level where they can be considered 'happy'.

Darius, thank you so much for your contribution. A long time I wanted to speak with a US soldier who may serving in Iraq. The comments you have made is exactly what I imagined. What the soldiers around you have to say about this war? do they want to go home?. Please feel free to tell us what's really going on in there and how do you feel about all this. We have also a thread about the abuse of the Iraqi prisoners here:

From CNN:
Anti-war soldier faces court-martial
SAVANNAH, Georgia (AP) -- A U.S. soldier who left his unit in Iraq rather than fight for what he called an "oil-driven war" faces a court-martial Wednesday on a desertion charge.
Staff Sgt. Camilo Mejia, 28, of Miami Beach, Florida, could go to prison for a year and receive a bad conduct discharge if convicted by a military jury at Fort Stewart.
The Florida National Guardsman left his unit in Iraq in October on a two-week furlough to the United States. He was gone for five months before turning himself in to the Army in March....

Good news from Iraq - bet you didn't know there was any?
This is a collection of good news stories from Iraq, done by an Australian blogger. While I was aware of most of these stories, this collection is really good.

This is a great story.

It is about the April 9 attacks in Baghdad, and what this particular soldier went through in order to survive.

It was unlike anything I have ever seen in my life. We were in the middle of Baghdad on a main highway being attacked; there were buildings all around us, and people in the buildings firing weapons at us. I looked off to the left at a frontage road and I saw nine cars in rows of three. There was a line of women in front of all the cars, and some of them had children with them. I thought they were just watching us get attacked, and then men started popping up behind them firing at us - they were using the women as shields!! It took me a second to realize that. They were standing on the hoods of the cars behind the women and children; it shocked the hell out of me. Then we started getting hit with small arms fire, which sounded like golf balls hitting metal. I started firing back at them but I couldn't get passed the women; they were all I could hit, and they started falling down. The men turned around and ran back behind the cars to fire. |

So they are saying that Saddam is still silent eh? I guess they couldn't use their 'unique' torture methods on him as they did with the others. I wonder though, does he really have anything to tell or are they just hoping to get him to make a public statement before elections so that the war will be vindicated?

LDS, desertion in wartime is a capital offense. This guy should, and probably does, face the death penalty |

Apparently, from the article, he doesn't face the death penalty. IMO, he should. Desertion in the face of the enemy is the 2nd worst thing a soldier can do. The worst is treason, where the soldier betrays his unit, which trusts and depends on him, to the enemy. That is why the punishment is so harsh. They both put all of the unit in danger.
