The war in Iraq is not a war on oil or a war concerning Iraq at all, but instead it is the standing up against two terrible forms of government on the entirety of the world: terrorism and dictatorship. Bush is trying to make apparent that even though democracy is imperfect, dictatorship and terrorism are evil and that which is evil must be vanquished. My father was a soldier in Iraq for a year or two and by the stories I have heard from him, we are doing a lot, not just in the political aspects, but the cultural and environmental aspects too. Let me explain the latter two. I refute not at all against the Middle East's cultures or beliefs, I love all men and women regardless of sins or religion. But what I am saying is that we are critiquing their culture so that they are still able to keep their traditions while going from third-world countries to developing countries and, one day, developed countries. For the environmental aspects you must be perturbed, but I will explain. I am not meaning environment as deserts or buildings but as the environmental hazards that accompany the country. For example, my father performed a particularly brave act by saving a little Iraqi girl from a pack of wild dogs. Am I saying that Iraq and the Middle East have many things that are integrated with the environment to make life dangerous? That is exactly what I am saying. According to my father, who is technically a primary source for the Iraqi war, the battles of Iraq have been one, the soldiers ARE being taken back. Iraq was not invaded; many Iraqis are grateful for what we have done.
Our success in Iraq is only a preliminary to overcoming the evil that still remains in the world, so everyone may enjoy life to the fullest not just us powerful, developed countries. Edited: SivanIlius on 16th Sep, 2006 - 3:54am
Well in my honest opinion and this is only an opinion, I feel that our soldiers will come back as far as to how soon? I think that some may come back sooner than others and that is really sad. I have a friend that just went over there approximately 3 months ago and he is coming home this month.
My feelings when people were telling Bush to bring our men and women home already and he said no because it would make us look weak was, excuse my language, crap. I feel that he should've listened and ended the war, brought in a truse or something to that effect.
Now my opinion is that I do not agree with the evasion or how things were thought out or proceeded. I think that Bush just did before he thought and granted we all do that but in this case look at how many men, women, and reporters were lost! it's unbelieveable.
I think that a change needs to happen and I think that it needs to happen quick, so we look weak as a country because our men and women came home but atleast we still have who is left over there to fight what really needs to be fought. Without our soliders we look even weaker and vulnerable to more attacks from terrorism or whatever else might come our way.
So needless to say No I don't agree with how things were dealt with and that Bush could've thought and then did, then maybe things would be different or maybe the same, no one knows for sure because we can not tell the future.
Mousetrails, I don't hate the US. I always find it remarkable how criticising the US goverment is tantamount to hating that country. Can't you guys ever accept your government might have got it wrong on Iraq?
My remarks about Iraq and the US Government's role are well known on this forum. But please leave the "hate America" rant out of it. I find it offensive and rude.
Sivan, your father is a very brave man and I am certain he is doing a lot of good in Iraq. Unfortunately, I think it is very tough for the US, British and allied forces to make any significant impact. Withdrawal isn't a matter of cowardice, it's more a matter of accepting mistakes were made and trying to solve the current crisis.
If there must be a security force in Iraq, which appears obvious, it should be an international peace keeping force. It's quite clear coalition forces, who are viewed as occupiers, are not welcome, and are only inflaming a desperate situation. This is not their fault, but rather the fault of those politicians who attacked without any post-war planning.
I think it is also unfair to suggest the coalition invasion was an attempt to develop a 3rd world country in Iraq's case. Before economic sanctions and war crippled the country, Iraq had a higher living standard than many first world nations.
Offtopic but, I won't say this again. I DO NOT consume US media. I live in Britain, why on earth would I read the US media? If you must know, I get my news from a variety of sources, including the Independent newspaper. Find me a paper of that quality in the US and I will gladly pick it up! |

arvhic has frequently asked me for examples of "good news" from Iraq. I have frequently answered, and here is another one.
This afternoon, I was able to listen to the Michael Medved show while driving home. He had a great guest on the radio show. She is a leader in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government. It seems that the Regional Government has produced some TV ads of ordinary Kurds expressing their tremendous gratitude to the United States for neutralizing Saddam Hussein.
It seems that since the US went into Iraq, the Kurds have experienced the most economic, educational, even spiritual growth in their history.
Anyway, here is a link to the webpage where you can view the ads.

The ads are very nice.

This will be my last post on this subject. I refuse to argue with the closed mind of anyone that hates America and believes everything our "news" media prints. I happen to love my imperfect country enough to stay and try to make it better. |

Below is short report about the latest National Intelligence Estimate. This authoritative report, produced by 16 US intelligence agencies, including the CIA, is normally used to shape US foreign policy. It says the Iraq invasion has actually fuelled terrorism, something many commentators have been crowing about for a long time.
QUOTE |
Iraq has 'shaped' terrorist leaders The Independent The Iraq insurgency is "shaping a new generation of terrorist leaders and operatives," US intelligence chiefs have warned, as the three-and-a-half-year-old war has turned into a "cause celèbre" for jihadists around the world. In a largely bleak assessment of the terrorist threat to the US, they conclude that, in the near term at least, the danger is likely to grow rather than diminish. |
Offtopic but, Thanks for the reference Nighthawk. I hope to see more examples of good coming from Iraq, please keep them flowing. LDS, totally agree with you, I just wish I could have my say without being labelled an American hater. It seems like a knee-jerk reaction to anything against Bush these days. |

You have disregarded all the information that HAS come out of it. The document was leaked, through the New York Times (who else is enough of a traitor to do this?). It was done expressly to embarrass George W. Bush. I can't figure out why the Democrats are running against the President, since he can't run for office again, even if this WAS a Presidential election.
Anyway, the quote you presented is out of context, and disregards the other parts of the NIE that indicate that the US presence in Iraq is having a strong negative effect on the Islamofascists, as well.
Offtopic but, I think that the reason so many of us consider your comments to be anti-American is that they parrot the clearly anti-American, "Blame America First" comments of the far Left throughout the world. Personally, instead of seeing all the "blame", I would love to see some constructive suggestions from somewhere. All I see are the Left stating that the US is all wrong. Lots of finger pointing, but no real suggestions. |

Nighthawk, I have found that as long as you are talking to people that use the old line news media and they believe the "leaks" and out and out lies that are printed in those papers about Iraq you are wasting your time. But I have also found the worm is turning. Some bloggers and most radio talk shows tell the truth about Iraq with its problems and victories. Only time, and the next election, will tell us how much effect truth is having on our battle for Iraq.
