I think for some people it is already a classic just as some people treat the Star Trek story / theme as classic now and yet it is still ongoing.

I don't think it will go anywhere beyond where it has gone except maybe for a TV series but they would have to be careful not to confuse anything from the trilogy by what they put on a TV version.

I do not think it will hit the level of Star Trek in that it just does not have that cult classic feel. Mind you few newer films do, perhaps it is the advanced technology that makes it hard to feel the charm vs realism.

Maybe not to the level of Star Trek but there is definitely a following. What hurt the whole thing was pulling the Matrix servers offline. People used to get a buzz with the online game, they should be allowed to continue, even if just to make it open source so no one makes a profit out of it if that's their worry.

I think the whole Matrix concept is a classic already. Since the movie they have been making sideline themes using the same background the trilogy provided.
