The Fox Lake, Illinois, police officer shot and killed early Tuesday was Lt. Joe Gliniewicz, Mayor Donny Schmit said. Gliniewicz was a 30-year veteran, the mayor said.

The Justice Department will soon announce it is launching an investigation of the Chicago Police Department in the aftermath of the shooting death of Laquan McDonald, a Justice official told USA TODAY. The inquiry would examine whether officers engaged in a pattern of biased policing.
