Don't worry, K, no problem at all. Slowly you will learn how to roll and act in every situation. You can act now but you are in melee so have to use your spear. You were very unlucky with the rolls until now... Don't lose faith. Edit: You only have one attack per round, except in special situations. Do you want to roll again or I use the first one? Ok, but that's confusing for me. For extra d20 that's not a problem, but for skills checks, saving throws and attacks you should only roll once. In this particular case, for instance, you miss with the first and hit with the second. You can understand that you put me in a difficult situation specially because you just received 7 points of damage and now have only 3 hit points left. I'll ignore both rolls and reroll your attack. Edit: Reading again your in-game post, I saw that those rolls still don't include the modifiers so you hit with both. But try to roll once in the future. Edited: Bruconero on 14th Dec, 2012 - 1:31am
Update. They are wild dogs (similar to jackals or coyotes) not wolves. If they were wolves you would be all rolling abilities again, I fear. What iCon said about damage is totally accurate. KittenPunk: the quarterstaff scores criticals only on a natural 20. Anyway, you would not need to roll the attack twice (that's only for criticals on ranged touch, if the spell allows for it). You just roll twice on damage. A suggestion: start playing the cleric or somebody could die. A Paladin can handle two wild dogs and I prepared (and simulated) the encounter counting that the party had a healer. As for Krusten, you can't see her but you heard the scream and is not too far. But I would worry more about Jonathan: did you guys realize he is alone against three? FoxRogue: it would be wise to finish off the wounded first. If you are not specific, I'll choose your target randomly. Updating the game now.
Was my plan to head for the scream on the next round. Was not going to just run off with 2 dogs and only me a long side the cart some times it is hard to see a layout where every one is in a forum game like this, so I had not realized someone else was say near by me enough that I was not the only one with in protecting the kids- from the 2 dogs distance.
And, thanks I could not recall if Quarterstaff had expanded critical's 19-20 or not. I don't know why I thought you had to confirm a critical. Like I have said before its been a long- long time since I played Dungeons and Dragons, maybe 3 years, since I last played at all, and about 5+ yeas since I played a cleric.
Anyhow, I have a question can you move and attack in 1 round? I know a spell takes a full action most of the time, but can I still start moving toward where the scream came from having taken a swing at the wold left standing by me?
I was not criticizing anybody, just giving some inputs to get some feedback. Is my first time in play by post too and I chose to put many opponents to understand how you guys would percieve the layout without miniatures. I made a mistake; I should write an introduction describing positions and distances in detail. I tried to do it with the story of the cat and the visions but was not enough. On these things, I need your help. Always ask if something is not clear. In the beginning we all have to adapt to this new way of playing and I really need your feedback.
It's ok, that is why I asked how far she was or if I could even see her. Out of game I know she was in the woods. In game Anntreen only knows she was travailing a long with us but her own way- a head and in the woods some where. She has no clue where she is in game, but out of game it would help to know if shes really far away and not worth me moving aka "The [scream] sounded far off", or near by and I could probably take that from "The sounds of combat and a scream can be heard only 10 feet a way threw the tress."
Details are more key then ever in a play by post game, but you are doing a [great] job so far. Yes, more info is wanted but I have always wanted more info even from the DM's I had when playing a round a table.
There is a huge magical world inside of a DM's head the trick is getting all that information out to the players with out it taking a novel of reading is the hard part. I know you will do fine however, I just look forward to it most of all.
Bruconero, have you ever tried using MapTool? [..] If the forum allows you to post pictures (or maybe a link to a picture?), you could post a screenshot of combat at the start of each round with a hex or square grid displayed so that folks can see distances easily.
