I'll spend some time observing the build process myself, trying to think of ways to improve upon and exploit the technique. There were just so many possibilities.
Later, when Grant asks about heading out, I'll say, "It's been a while since we've been free to do so, that hole full of hobgoblins opened up, and then we went to the elven village. But scouting and mapping the wilderness is our principle duty, along with identifying potential threats. If people are ready to get going again, I was going to suggest resuming that tomorrow where we left off."
I trail off a bit, "I wish Dennis was still with us, he is damn good at this sort of thing. When you need to explore hostile territory, it really helps to have an army ranger at the fore."
When I have a chance, I'll contact the guard captain, Lweithialia, with an offer. I'll show her Ping, and describe its capabilities. "I can make more like it, and the cost is not too prohibitive. I figure that, among other things, a set of these could help establish an early warning perimeter, watching for anything like the orc attack. They don't ever tire, they're fast, hard to catch, and if it is destroyed before it can report in, its master will know right away.
"There is a catch, each must be bound to a master, and that master will be harmed if the construct is destroyed. A person of sound body should be fine if such occurs, but a frail person could be killed or seriously hurt. The same could occur if one person is bound to several of these things and they are destroyed at around the same time."
"So what do you think? Is this a direction worth pursuing for the security of the stronghold?"

I get up for the day, do my mediation and dress in my dark green dress for the day. I head down to the dining hall for some breakfast. I get my food and set at my normal table near the lord's and after setting down my plate of food. I tell the lord, "Good morning" and give him as well as Kelvin a smile. Calvin is normally there as well, but he is not, I figure he already had breakfast and is in his shop checking brews and putting others in barrels.
If any from the group come up to me and wish to join me, I shall welcome them and have small talk, not bringing up our latest trip.
I'll try to answer Lweithialia's questions as best I can. "During the creation process they'll need to donate a pint of blood, it gets mixed into the body of the construct and provides much of its animating force. I don't know any blood magic, but if there are concerns about such things the donor would be free to watch and ensure I'm not doing anything else with their blood."
"Thereafter, they would have a mental connection with the construct and control it absolutely. These things are not truly independent, they have some intelligence, but in several respects it is more like growing an extra arm than gaining a companion."
"If the construct is destroyed, it would be much the same as someone chopping that extra limb off with a weapon that cauterized the wound so bleeding out is not a possibility. It will hurt, it will be a shock. But unless the person's health is otherwise compromised, they will recover, and do so much more easily than if we were speaking of losing one of the limbs they were born with."
"That said, I do suggest minimizing the risks, leave them with orders to avoid conflict wherever possible, and the odds of someone going through that go down considerably. These things are scouts and messengers, and are not suited as direct combat assets."
I would awaken as well, feeling more at least perhaps because I no longer needed to be concerned with avoiding Lord Douglas. I would get dressed and go to the dining hall to get something to eat, wondering who else was up and about today, as well what the plans for the day would be.
Travis refreshes himself, and goes down to the dinning hall for breakfast. He sees Lord Douglas, and Vicky, Thomas, "Good morning, all sleep well,"? He says.
After breakfast, he will go down to the stables, and feed and groom his mare. Then, go into the library to read, reflect, and a quiet place to meditate.
The words of Lweithialia are filled with determination, bordering on faith, it peaked my curiosity how devoted she was to the Lord but that was all. "You are too modest," I said as I bowed again and stood back to respect her work." I will make sure to thank the Lord as well as you for this assistance to us stranger."
I joined the others in the meal hall, under my arm are two sticks. I place them under the table where I'll be sitting. "Morning all, I visited the place being built for us. Looks like it will be pretty cozy, then l started thinking, yeah, well probably have to start a chores list to keep up with the place. Just something that popped into my brain. I figure after my current project," I say pointing to the sticks, "I might want to build an easel next. Something fixed to embellish the maps were making on."
