Are people from India: white, brown, or black? Is being white somehow better than being dark?

Skin Color In India - Page 2

I find this an interesting topic too. But when you think about who owns the wealth it's hardly surprising, yet strangely disturbing.

I would think of Indians as brown skinned. I'm half Indian/Malaysian half Aussie and have like a caramel coloured skin but I tan very easily. But I guess being a bit of both cultures, and shades, I can find it amusing how light skinned people want to be tanned and dark skinned people like fair.

India Color Skin

I went to an Indian web site to find a whole page of questions about "How to become fair" even to a 1 month old baby! None of them accept the fact that indeed they were born with that skin color but blame it to all kind of things. Some examples, please read them all:

Q: I have girls aged seven and 2 months old. my elder daughter is dark like her father and ever since she of 2 she always said she wanted to be fair like my mother(her grandmother). now my 2month old daughter is very fair and sometimes I can sense that my elder daughter feels little inferior and can see the pain in her eyes. what to do? I there a way to make her skin little ligheter. now she will be going to grade two in a small town near toronto where all her classmates would be white canadians. I afraid how she will cope up with that and will she have any friends. she is very intelligent and good looking. her english is excellent and tops in her class. still I am always afraid that due to her skin color she might feel bad or have to face adverse remarks. my husband and I are more careful now when dealing with her ,at the same time not making her conscious of that. how to deal ? how to make her understand that we are least bothered about her skin color and these things are not at all important and worth ignoring. from every other aspect she is great. please advise.

Q: I am quite darkish brown, but when I was born I was almostpure whitish colour, can you tell me what to eat do to Make my skin colour at Least to change back to a punjabi sexy light skinned colour Please help quick I m going to be married in 5 months Thank you.

Then the Editor wrote a good article on why Indians are obsessed with fairness but it seems like most people on their comments about the article continue asking how to be fair:

Comments:   I just don't know why people care so much about being fair. I'm dark and I'm indian.. I've received my own fair share of insults, but hey, it's a cruel world. live with it. and darn anybody who thinks they're superior just cos they're fair. and it's been within our own race, mind you. the indian race. how screwed up is that?.

Comments:   sad and self-defeating as it may sound but girls let's face it , fair girls do have an edge over us dark ones. a fair girl strikes an impression instantly. ok dark girls too are coming to fore these days but we should recall that it is not their dark skin that is getting them attention but other features like good height, pronounced features and flawless skin. but what about those who don't possess any of those and to cap it all are dark ? frankly as a girl I'm more attracted to a guy with a fair complexion myself.then why should we fool ourselves believing that dark girls are in no way less than attractive than the fair ones. I'm dark myself and look thrice before buying any garment if it shows too much of skin. not because I don't want to wear skimpy clothes but bcoz of the fear that it'd show too much of dark skin and that frankly isn't a pretty sight. and let's face it most of the skin-showing clothes don't look that good on the dark-complexioned. I for one wear those which show least skin like full sleeves, no skirts n polo necks. and I know some people might get totally enraged or even disheartened after reading my comment but girls and guys it's a harsh reality we dark people have to come to terms with. and yes if anyone has some remedy to even turn the skin tone to even a shade lighter please don't hesitate to share it with us. it can make someones or rather a million's day or life for that matter..

Comments:   lets get real here. whenever someone is looking for a girl for there son the first question they ask the parents is ."is she fair?" if she isn't then they usualy take there buissness elsewhere. If the guy is handsome and smart and fair they will ofcoarse settle for atleast a medium education and beautiful features with fair skin. if he is great in any way the parents will ofcoarse want a great fair girl for the son they love so much. We need fair skin. help.

Comments:   I am a dark skinned Indian male and have always been paranoid about my colour when attending weddings and functions or family gathering where lots of indians come together. When socialising with my white friends I am completely at ease but around Indians things change and I want this ongoing pain to stop. I have been insulted my family memebers and bullied when I was young, have tried various creams and nothing seems to work. All I want to be is equal to others but dont know how things will change I read the bits about everyones equal etc etc but it doesnt feel like it sometimes as I would love to believe these things but every now and then I get a comment thrown at me about my skin colour and it puts me into depression.

And these are only some of the many comments.

Skin Color In India Reviews Consumer & Travel Family Culture

I probably don't need to tell this crowd, but the skin color hierarchy is nothing unique to India. Aishwarya Rai is a former Miss Universe and modern Bollywood favorite because she resembles French traits - eye color, highlighted hair, and skin color. In multiple cultures, the "fairer" the skin color, the more it denoted a person or people who did not work in the fields or spend time laboring in the sun. Japanese culture had white rice paper before any Europeans stepped onto their land. (Of course, not all cultures started with the same values attributed to the skin tone gradient, but the concept of skin color "ranking" is nothing new.)

Although I agree that our world of American- and European-dominated mass media has come to influence the international standard of beauty to one non-universal (unattainable) image, I believe this is only a recent sort of global phenomenon. The context has changed so that people think it's all rooted in European influence. I almost feel as if that dismisses the original histories of groups' own interpretations of what is and is not of value. It's almost giving too much credit to the power within "white privilege."

I think that is a very odd thing to want; I mean, people all over the world have been fighting to become equals regardless of their skin colour. And the first thing they do is try to change their skin colour.

Offtopic but,
shocked.gif' /><!--endemo--> Wow! Is this whole situation really happening? People really care about the fairness of their skin that much? If anything, <I>my skin is too fair</I> I need to get more sun.</td></tr></table><!-- OFFTOPIC END --> </p></div>

QUOTE
most Indians would not refer themselves as "dark" even if they are.

I have to disagree here, LDS. In my experience, Trinidadian indians are more likely to refer to themselves as "dark" or "light skinned" than any other race. We place the distinguishment on ourselves. When an Indian girl/boy describes someone of the opposite sex, skin colour is always the first thing out of their mouths...not height, or build. Its a shame, but we do place loads of importance on the colour of our skin. I've been in the company of girls who said "she's prettier than me..shes fair (light skinned)" I mean, it's crazy! Its a standard that is instilled in us as children. Parents tell their daughters not to bring home any "black" men..referring to people of Indian descent, not African. It's a shame that we are all the same, but still choose to discriminate over something as trivial as skin colour

Cookie, I was talking more about Indians from India not really Trinidadian- Indians although this last group has a fascination with skin color, too. Did you read all the statements I put above? One woman even wanted to change the skin color of her 1 month old baby! It's madness. I do not know the pressure this people go through but maybe you can share your experience here in Trinidad. Are Indian kids discriminated because of skin color at home or at school?
Do Indian women use those fairness cremes?

For those of you who think skin color is not an issue in India check out the below links: (they disabled embed links otherwise I would have put it here)

Female

In this ad the father is worried about his daughter because she is too dark for the job: I cannot get a job because I am not fair enough.

Male

Yes, there is even a need for males to be fair too. In this one the stunt actor is not fair enough so they have to bring in someone else who is more fair to do the part: I'm a star because I am fair.

I was shocked at these videos, Fair and Lovely got tremendous criticism for these ads. They are not only saying that being "dark" (or "weathish" as dark skinned Indians refer to themselves, they will never mention the word dark) is like a curse but also if you are light-skinned you are automatically pretty/handsome, accepted, successful and popular. Shame.
