MichaelC's Call Of Cthulhu 6th Ed Create Character

This thread is being placed for Character Generation and concerns regarding that for my Call of Cthulhu campaign located here.

NOTE: Chaosium Free Downloads Center for Call Of Cthulhu related material.

Start by using the "Create Associated Role-playing Game Character" At the top left to create your Character.

The d20 character sheets supplied with the system will give us basic stats, and we will be addressing concerns about rolling characters and characteristics offline as needed, and at least minimal access to rule books.

[..] I can assist any player with any information needed to set up characters, or start the game.

Most of the questions can start here, welcome to my little corner of madness.

Character Create Ed th Cthulhu Call MichaelCs

And we're off!

Michael: I have the 6th edition rules. Is it OK to do a 6th Ed. Character & post here, rather than do a d20 & convert?

All: I've run CoC in the past and am available if there are any questions regarding game mechanics, background genre, etc.

Brian--
I am fine with you creating a character specifically from the 6th Edition rules and posting it here, since I will be converting any other characters to 6th Edition for my record keeping regardless of system they used to roll up their character.

Character Create Ed th Cthulhu Call MichaelCs

Good, since that's what I've done. biggrin.gif Still a few minor details to be filled in but most of it's there & ready for GM approval.

I also have a 6th Edition modern character sheet I put together in Word format so it can be filled in & edited. Not as pretty as the Chaosium PDFs but fairly useful.

Not that I'm excited about the game or anything....

For any interested, the 6th edition quickstart rules are available for free at the rpgnow website. Just search under quick start, and it will show up right under the 7th edition quickstart. This will help anyone unfamiliar with the game to get a little better grounding.

MichaelC's Call Of Cthulhu 6th Ed Create Character

As we have several players who aren't familiar with CoC, I offered to write up a few quick things to be aware of about the game as people start work on character creation. MichaelC graciously agreed. What follows are my thoughts, not his.

  • Investigation in advance is always a good idea. Many of Lovecraft's stories involve gradually peeling away layers of illusion & appearances until the awful truth is exposed. Charging into direct confrontation will usually result in a premature death. Which leads to...
  • Combat is DEADLY and should be avoided if possible. A single bullet can kill a character dead, just as in real life. There is no rapid healing magic. Many of the various creatures are superhuman in ability, and some are simply immune to gunfire. Which leads to....
  • Indirect action is often required. Sometimes driving something away (Or sealing it away) is the only viable tactic. If the party discovers there's an inhuman abomination at the bottom of an abandoned mine shaft, there's no need for everyone to crawl down the shaft and get eaten. Perhaps the shaft can be capped with concrete, or explosives used to collapse the shaft on top of it, trapping it underground. Though if the shaft is on private property, the landowner may have something to say about it. Which leads to...
  • The rest of the world doesn't believe a word of this. If police are called to a disturbance and find an Investigator surrounded by bullet-ridden bodies, they're not going to be interested in ravings about vampires or end-of-the-world cults; the Investigator is going to be arrested for homicide. (Insanity defenses are difficult to pull off and usually result in spending 30 years in a secure hospital rather than 30 years in the penitentiary.)
  • Learning The Awful Truth always has a price. CoC takes it as a given that there really are Things Man Was Not Meant To Know. Reading arcane tomes of forbidden knowledge usually carries a price in Sanity points. Just seeing some of the creatures of the Mythos carries a Sanity cost. Which leads to...
  • A party of cooperating specialists is usually the best approach. Someone will need to learn the forbidden knowledge required to understand what threat is faced and how it can be dealt with; this character will be marginal in combat, in part because of the Sanity loss caused by their studies. Skills such as Library Use, Accounting, and History can make or break an investigation. Action-oriented characters should stay out of the more eldritch parts of the game so they can function in a dangerous situation. And finally....
  • Remember your genre. Many of Lovecraft's stories ended with the sole survivor explaining that he didn't belong in this insane asylum, if you'd just let him explain what really happened. This is a universe in which Anyone Can Die.

Good post there Brianh.

Very good suggestions and recommendations for CoC. CoC is definitely a very realistic and death is really a death.

Naive Student says...

I made my character, for your approval MichaelC.

I took a liberty in my skills moving 30 from Occupation to Hobbies, considering the character is young and he seemed too highly educated. I'm also using my points on a wide range of niche hobbies with no huge bonuses. Is Consume Alcohol okay for a skill? If you want me to keep them strictly in the right categories I can change it.

I wonder how many of these skills will actually be useful... There are so many.

In your game, does needing glasses affect your spotting, such as +10 with, -10 without? The +10 I wrote is just from skill points
What are the base skills for melee weapons before adding points?
Are Electronics and Elec Repair the same skill?

I couldn't help but notice TJ White has few occupational skills. I'm no expert on the system, but the quick start guide said 20 times Intelligence. Also such a low sanity, though could be due to his history.
