Gaden is tall, dark skinned man whose unkempt appearance that belies 24 years military career. Guided by code of ethics forged on countless battlefields and tempered by camaraderie both gained and lost, he believes in the law (although years of marine bureaucracy has taught him that there is always wiggle room).

Grew up on mining colony, dragged by his fortune seeking father, the hardships of the colony and the relative squalor of the people drive Gaden to enlist. His first duty assignment was aboard the USS Donagger, war-class naval cruiser.
Like most low ranking marines, he was assigned sensors duty on the ships reactor. One night he picked up an undiscovered reactor leak that nearly destroyed the pride of the fleet, earning him commission. newly minted officer, Gaden attends the officer training program where he quickly befriends fellow classmate Victor VanSycthe. He quickly impresses in OTS, excelling in squad drills. He is promoted over VanSycthe, which permanently drives wedge between them. Gadens first assignment out of OTS is on the USS Lightmaiden, leading boarding parties in capturing enemy ships. His unit performs overwhelmingly efficiently, becoming known as the Reaper of Ships. He gets reassigned to newly crafted state of the art ship. With the newest tech aboard the ship, Gaden and crew are trained on the new weaponry. He is eventually transferred to far-away planet, one that will require him on station of an unknown number of years. During his tour of duty, he finds out that his dutiful wife, who has always been waiting for his return has passed away. He seizes the first chance to retire, as the thing he always fought to protect is now gone.
